[Mark 3:13, NIV] Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.

Summary

When Jesus was on the earth, who were the people He spent most of His time with? The 12 disciples. They were following Jesus wherever He went.

예수님이 세상에 계실 때에 가장 많은 시간을 함께 보낸 사람들이 누구죠? 열두제자들이죠. 그들은 예수님이 가는 곳은 어디든 따라다녔어요.

Basically, a disciple means a person who learns from a teacher. It is similar to a student. There are few differences between a disciple and a student. A student is usually about learning knowledge like English, Math, Science.

제자라는 단어의 뜻은 원래 선생님에게서 배우는 사람이라는 뜻이에요. 학생이랑 비슷한 뜻이죠. 제자와 학생은 조금 차이가 있어요. 학생은 주로 영어나, 수학이나 과학 같은 것을 배우는 사람을 뜻하지요.

But a disciple is learning almost everything about how the teacher lives. How to deal with problems, how to treat different people, and of course they learn the knowledge and wisdom of the teacher.

그런데, 제자는 선생님이 살아가는 방식을 전부 배우는 사람들이에요. 문제가 있을 때 어떻게 해결하시는지, 사람들을 어떻게 대하시는지, 그리고 물론 지식과 지혜도 선생님에게서 배우지요.

If you are a teacher who is to pick students to teach what kind of students would you like to pick? Because you have to teach them, you probably want someone who learns fast. Someone very smart.

여러분이 선생님이고 학생들을 고를 수 있다면, 어떤 학생들을 고를 것 같아요? 여러분이 가르쳐야 하니까, 빨리 배우는 그런 학생들을 고르고 싶겠죠?

So, do you think Jesus also picked His 12 disciples who were the smartest among the followers?

그래서, 예수님도 그렇게 가장 똑똑한 사람들 열두명을 뽑으셨을까요?

Not really.

아니에요.

At the time, a lot of people could not go to school because they were poor and had to work from a young age. Most of Jesus’s disciples were poor and could not afford to go to school. At that time a lot of people could not even read and write and some disciples were like that.

옛날에는 아이들도 다 일을 해야해서 대부분 학교에 갈 수 없었어요. 예수님의 제자들도 역시 마찬가지였지요. 그래서 많은 사람들이 글을 읽고 쓰지 못했고 예수님의 제자들도 마찬가지였어요.

But, we know that huge crowds of people were following Jesus, and He was so popular after healed many sick people. In fact, among those thousands of people there must have been well educated smart people.

그렇지만, 많은 병자들이 고침을 받았기 때문에 엄청나게 많은 사람들이 예수님을 따르고 있었잖아요. 수만명의 사람 중에는 분명히 똑똑한 사람들도 있었을 거에요.

But Jesus still chose the twelve disciples with different qualities.

What are those qualities Jesus looked for?

그런데도 예수님은 다른 조건들을 가진 열두제자를 선택하셨어요.

예수님이 찾는 사람들은 어떤 조건을 가진 사람들인가요?

It was humility, obedience, and love of God.

그건 겸손과, 순종과 하나님에 대한 사랑이었어요.

Humility is a characteristic that you see others as important.

Obedience is to listen and do what God says.

They must be the people who love God, and others.

겸손은 다른 사람도 소중하다는 것을 아는 것이에요.

순종은 하나님의 말씀을 잘 듣고, 그대로 행하는 것이에요.

그리고 물론 하나님과 사람을 사랑하는 사람이어야죠.

These are three characteristics we see from Jesus!

So, Humility, Obedience, and Love these are what God looks for from people.

이 세가지 캐릭터는 바로 예수님의 캐릭터지요.

그래서 바로 겸손, 순종, 그리고 사랑이 하나님이 찾는 사람의 특징입니다.

Not the smartest, the greatest, the strongest.

A lot of times, these greatest forget to listen, and learn from others.

가장 똑똑하고, 위대하고, 가장 힘이 센 사람들이 아니에요.

이렇게 대단한 사람들은 다른 사람들의 말을 듣는 것을 잊어버리고, 다른 사람에게서 배우는 것을 잊을 때가 많아요.

Then they become the least favorite of God.

그래서 하나님이 기뻐하지 않는 사람이 되어버립니다.

In fact, God doesn’t need their great ability.

Because God is almighty.

사실 하나님은 그들의 대단한 능력을 필요로 하지 않아요.

왜냐하면 하나님은 위대하신 분이기 때문입니다.

So, He wants people who have humility, obedience, and love.

Because they will listen, follow and love Jesus well.

하나님은 겸손과 순종과 사랑의 사람들을 원하신다는 거죠.

그런 사람들이 잘 듣고, 잘 따르고, 예수님을 사랑하기 때문입니다.

And Jesus’s greatness will be appeared through those people at the end. Just like these disciples, the greatest and the most honored human beings in history.

그리고 결국은 예수님의 위대함이 그 사람들을 통해서 나타나게 되는 거에요. 바로 이 제자들처럼 가장 위대하고 존경받는 사람들이 되는 거죠.

If there are things you cannot do so well, don’t be too discouraged!

God can help you and use you for His Great works.

여러분이 뭔가를 잘 할 수 없어도, 너무 실망하지 말아요.

하나님은 여러분을 도울 수 있고, 하나님의 위대한 일에 쓰임받을 수 있습니다.

If you can do great things, remember if you forget humility because of what you can do well then it will make you the least at the end.

So, keep in mind what God is looking for!

그리고 여러분이 위대한 일을 할 수 있다면, 잊어서는 안되요! 겸손을 잃어버리면 여러분이 잘하는 그 일 때문에 가장 하찮은 사람이 되어버리는 거예요.

자, 기억하세요! 하나님이 찾으시는 것이 뭔지!

Prayer

Dear father,

We become arrogant so easily when we see we do better than others.

We become so discouraged when others do better than us. But we don’t want to be like that. What Jesus looks for in us is humility that we see others as important, and obedience that we listen to God well, and love God and others. Then God will show His greatness through those people. The 12 disciples were not great people but when they followed Jesus with humility, obedience, and love they became the greatest in Heaven forever. Let all of us remember the three things!

하나님 아버지,

우리는 우리보다 못하는 사람을 볼 때 금새 교만해집니다.

남들이 더 잘하면 금방 자신감을 잃어버립니다. 예수님은 우리가 다른 사람들을 우리만큼 소중하게 생각하길 원하셨고, 하나님의 말씀을 잘 듣는 순종하는 사람들이 되길 원하셨고, 하나님과 사람들을 사랑하길 원하셨습니다.

그러면 하나님의 위대함이 바로 그런 사람들을 통해서 나타날 것이라고 하셨습니다. 열두제자는 그렇게 대단한 사람들은 아니었지만, 겸손과 순종과 사랑으로 예수님을 따랐을 때 그들은 영원한 하나님 나라에서 가장 위대한 사람들이 되었습니다. 우리도 그 세가지를 기억하길 원합니다.
