[누가복음 5:10] 또한 세베대의 아들들로서 시몬의 동료인 야고보와 요한도 놀랐다. 예수께서 시몬에게 말씀하셨다. "두려워하지 말아라. 이제부터 너는 사람을 낚을 것이다."

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were amazed too. (James and John were Simon’s partners.) Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will be fishermen for men.” [Luke 5:10]

설교 Message

When Jesus called his disciples, interestingly, at least 7 people among 12 already knew each other.

예수님이 제자들을 부르셨을 때, 흥미롭게도, 최소한 7명은 서로 잘 아는 사이였어요.

They were working together on that day when Jesus visited them. It also means that they were growing up together.

예수님이 그들을 찾아왔을 때 그들은 함께 일하고 있었는데, 같은 동네에서 함께 자란 사람들이었던 것이죠.

Peter and Andrew were older than James and John. 베드로와 안드레는 야고보와 요한보다 나이가 더 많았을 거에요.

Later Peter and John often appear together in the Bible.

Peter must look like an uncle for young John.

나중에 보면, 베드로와 요한은 성경에 함께 자주 등장하는데 아마 처음에는 베드로가 요한의 삼촌처럼 보일 정도로 요한은 아직 소년이었지요.

They have known each other for a long time. And now they started a very special journey together.

Until now they were fishing together.

그들은 아마 아주 오랫동안 알고 지냈을거예요. 이제 새롭게 시작한 놀라운 여정에도 함께 하게 되었지요.

Now they would meet people and bring them to Jesus so that they can also be children of God.

They are in a totally different business now.

전에는 함께 물고기를 잡았었지만, 이제는 사람들을 예수님께 데려와서 그들도 하나님의 자녀들이 될 수 있도록 하는 제자들이 된 거에요.

이전과 아주 많이 다른 일을 하게 된 것이죠.

But still together.

그렇지만 여전히 함께 인 것이죠.

In fact, since they go to Heaven later together, they will always be together.

사실상, 영원한 천국에도 함께 가기 때문에 그들은 영원히 함께 하는 사람들이 된 거예요.

Now,

I think we have to see the truth.

그러고 나면, 우리도 깨닫게 됩니다.

You and I, and the teacher here. And friends next to you!

They are not just here randomly.

여러분과 저도, 그리고 여기 선생님도, 친구들도!

모두 그냥 우연히 여기에 함께 있는게 아니에요.

They are all meant to be here with us.

It was not a coincidence. It was God’s plan for us to know each other.

이 사람들이 여기에 우리와 함께 있는 건 우연이 아니에요.

이건 하나님이 미리 계획하신 일이예요.

We may not know all the reasons for being here together.

But, one thing is certain.

왜, 우리를 이렇게 만나게 하셨는지는 알 수 없지만,

한가지는 확실하겠죠.

These people are your neighbors who you must love as yourself.

Because, you will not know them only for a while but forever.

이 사람들은 우리가 내 자신처럼 사랑해야 할 이웃들이라는 사실이에요.

왜냐면, 이 사람들은 우리가 잠깐 만나고 말 사람들이 아니라, 영원히 함께 할 사람들이거든요.

Imagine if you hate a classmate who will be with you in the same class for a year. It won’t be easy and fun.

상상해보세요. 일년 동안 함께 할 같은 클래스에 아주 싫어하는 친구가 있다면 어떻겠어요? 아마 정말 힘들고 어려운 일년이 될 거예요.

But not only for one year but for 100s, 1000s of years together. What do you think? It won’t be fun. Right?

그런데, 수백, 수천년을 함께 할 사람이라면 어때요? 영원히 함께 할 사람과 사이가 나쁘다면 얼마나 괴로운 일이에요?

Peter was older and John was still a boy at the time. But later they work together for God. In Heaven there is no older or younger. They are all grown up and do God’s live together as friends.

베드로와 요한이 처음 성경에 나타날 때, 요한은 아직 소년이었어요. 그렇지만, 시간이 지나 둘다 어른이 되어서 함께 하나님을 위한 일을 했어요. 그리고 천국에서는 둘다 어른들이죠. 거기에선 누가 더 나이가 많고 적은 게 의미가 없어요.

The youngest one among you will not always be smaller than you.

For hundreds of years after you guys are grown up, you will be together as grown ups.

여러분 중에 가장 어린 아이가 영원한 세계에서는 결코 여러분 보다 작지 않아요.

똑같이 다 어른으로 수백년, 수천년을 함께 친구로 살게 되는 거예요.

So treat each other with respect and care for each other.

One day the younger ones will be your friends. And stay as friends forever.

그러니, 이제 서로에 대해서 존중하고, 더 생각해 주기로 해요.

언젠가, 어린 동생이 친구가 되어 있을 거예요. 그리고 그렇게 친구로 지내는 시간이 영원만큼 더 길지요.

Then we also will become friends with Peter and John.

And Moses, Abraham, David and so on. Amazing people from the Bible will be our friends.

그러고보면, 우리는 성경 속의 베드로와 요한과도 친구가 될 수 있을 거예요.

모세나 아브라함, 다윗과 같은 엄청난 성경속 사람들도 마찬가지죠.

And most importantly Jesus will be with us being our friends forever.

그리고 가장 중요한 건, 예수님도 우리와 영원히 친구가 되어주실 거라는 겁니다.

Do you think Jesus will be kind and care for you? Will He be a good friend?

예수님이 여러분에게 친절하고 좋은 친구가 되어주실까요?

So,

Be friendly and respect one another as Jesus did to Peter and to John.

그렇다면, 여러분도 서로에게, 더 어린 동생들도 존중하며 친구가 되어주세요.

예수님이 베드로와 요한에게 하신 것처럼요.

And always care for people around you wherever you go.

That is how we follow Jesus who cares for everyone!

그리고, 어디에서든 누구든 우리 가까이에 있는 사람들을 존중해 주세요.

그것이 우리가 모두를 사랑하신, 예수님을 따르는 방법입니다.

And I will tell you who is bigger and more important people in Heaven. It is not the older or taller.

비밀을 하나 말해줄게요. 천국에서 큰 사람은 나이가 더 많거나, 키가 큰 사람이 더 중요하고 큰 사람이 아니에요.

People who listen to Jesus better and be kind to others are the greater and more important people in Heaven.

천국에서는 예수님의 말씀을 잘 듣고, 다른 사람들에게 kind 한 사람들이 가장 위대하고 멋진 사람들이에요.

These are the great people in Heaven forever. 이런 사람들이 천국에서 영원토록 위대한 사람들이에요.

Like a mustard seed | 겨자씨처럼

Bible Verses

The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. The mustard seed is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. 32But when you plant this seed, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants. It produces large branches. Even the wild birds can make nests in it and be protected from the sun.”

겨자씨와 같으니, 그것은 땅에 심을 때에는 세상에 있는 어떤 씨보다도 더 작다. 32그러나 심고 나면 자라서, 어떤 풀보다 더 큰 가지들을 뻗어, 공중의 새들이 그 그늘에 깃들일 수 있게 된다.”

Summary

이 겨자씨는 일반적으로 음식으로 쓰이는 씨들.. 콩 같은 것에 비하면 아주 작은 씨인데 이것이 자라면 새들이 앉을 정도로 커질 수 있지요.

겨자나무가 결코 큰 나무는 아니지만 씨앗에 비하면 몇백배 커진 셈이에요.

그리고 창공을 열심히 날 던 새들이 앉아서 쉴 수 있는 가지가 되어주기도 하지요.

These mustard seeds are the seeds that are commonly used as food. They are tiny seeds compared to something like beans, but when they grow, they can grow big enough for birds to sit on. The mustard tree is by no means a big tree, but it is hundreds of times larger than a seed. It also serves as a branch where the birds that flew hard in the sky can sit and rest. 

그리고 겨자씨의 정말 놀라운 점은 또 있어요.

빈 들에 겨자씨가 몇개가 떨어지면, 몇 해만 지나도 그 곳 전체가 노랗게 물들 정도로 겨자 밭이 되어 버린답니다.

And there's another really amazing thing about mustard seeds. If a few mustard seeds fall on an empty field, it turns into a mustard field so that the whole area turns yellow in just a few years.

2,000년 전에 예수님이 오셨을 때

예수님의 제자는 겨우 12명이었어요.

인구의 비율로 보자면 0.0000001% 밖에 되지않는 아주 작은 존재였죠.

2,000 년이 지난 오늘날에는 전세계 인구의 30% 넘는 사람들이 예수님을 믿고 있어요. (300 million times growth)

그 숫자는 2.17 Billions 에 달합니다. 

세계 전체인구가 400 million이었을 때에 70여명에 불과했던 이 사람들이

세상에 겨자씨처럼 뿌려졌고 온 들판을 노랗게 물들이는 겨자가 밭을 이룬 것입니다.

When Jesus came 2,000 years ago, there were only 12 disciples of Jesus. In terms of the proportion of the population, it was only 0.0000001%, a very small existence. Today, 2,000 years later, over 30% of the world's population believe in Jesus. (300 million times growth) That number is 2.17 Billions. When the total population of the world was 400 million, these people, who were only about 70, were sown like mustard seeds in the world and the mustard that dyed the whole field yellow formed a field.

어떤 영화의 이야기에요.

한 선생님이 아이들에게 세상을 아름답게 만들수 있는 방법을 생각해내고 실천해보라는 숙제를 내줬어요.

It's a movie story. A teacher gave the children homework to come up with a way to make the world beautiful and put it into practice.

트레버라는 아이는 진지하게 그 숙제를 고민했죠.

그리고는 생각해 냈어요. 한 사람이 세명에게 이유없는 친절을 베풀고, 고마워하는 사람에게 “당신도 모르는 사람 세명에게 친절을 베풀어주세요.” 라고 부탁을 하는 것이다. 그렇게 하다보면, 금방 세상이 정말 아름다워질 수 있을 것이라는 꿈을 꾸게 되고, 아이는 그것을 실천하기 시작했다.

A kid named Trevor seriously thought about the homework. And then I came up with it. One person is kind to three people for no reason, and one person says to a grateful person, "Be kind to three people you don't even know." is asking for it. By doing so, he soon had a dream that the world could be truly beautiful, and the child began to put it into practice.

그리고, 4개월 만에 전국으로 퍼진 ‘친절베풀기'는 정말 수많은 사람들이 경험하고, 또 다른 이들에게 친절을 베풀기 시작한다. 그렇게 수많은 사람들이 누가 시작한지도 모른채 계속 친절을 주고 받는 아름다운 세상이 된다는 이야기다.

And, after 4 months, 'giving kindness' spread across the country, so many people experience it, and they begin to show kindness to others. It is the story of a beautiful world where so many people continue to give and receive kindness without knowing who started it.

세명에게 친절을 베푸는 것은 쉬운 것은 아닐 수 있지만, 온 세상을 아름답게 만들만큼 대단한 일은 아닐 것이다. 그러나, 겨자씨 같은 한 아이가 시작한 그 일은 정말로 세상을 아름답게 할 수도 있을 것 같다.

It may not be easy to be kind to three people, but it won't be great enough to make the whole world beautiful. But it seems like a mustard seed can really make the world beautiful.

여러분이 하나님이 기뻐하시는 아주 작은 행동을 시작한다면, 그건 그렇게 대단한 일로 여겨지지 않아도 겨자씨 처럼 아주 작고 보잘 것 없어도, 

우리 안에 그 천국이 있으면, 하나님 나라가 우리 안에 있으면,

저와 여러분도 온 세상을 아름답게 변화시키는 사람이 될 수 있어요.

If you start a very small act that pleases God, even if it is not considered a big deal, even if it is as small and insignificant as a mustard seed, if the heaven is in us, if the kingdom of God is in us, you and I will make the whole world beautiful You can be a changer.

하나님이 우리 각자에게 주신 소원이 있나요? 주님이 여러분과 어떤 일을 하고 싶어하시나요?

그것이 지금은 전혀 가능해 보이지 않을 수 있어요. 

그 열두명의 제자가 온 세상을 바꾼다는 상상처럼요. 전혀 가능해 보이지 않죠.

그러나, 하나님은 그 열두명으로 세상을 바꾼 것처럼,

우리도 하나님이 기뻐하시는 한 마디 말, 작은 행동을 통해 세상을 바꿀 수 있어요.

Does God have a wish for each of us? What does the Lord want to do with you? It may not seem possible at all now. It's like imagining that the twelve disciples change the whole world. It doesn't seem possible at all. However, just as God changed the world with those 12 people, we can also change the world through the words and small actions that please God.

하나님 아버지,

우리들은 아직 어려서 대단한 일을 할 수 없을 것 같아요. 하지만 하나님이 원하는 작은 일을 하면 온 세상을 바꿀만한 힘이 있다는 사실을 믿습니다. 우리가 할 수 있는 작은 일, 하나님이 우리와 함께 하고 싶은 일을 잘 발견하고, 잘 따르길 원합니다. 그래서 주님이 만드신 세상이 더 아름다운 곳이 되길 소망합니다.

우리와 함께 세상을 가꾸길 기뻐하시는,

Heavenly Father, 

We don't think we can do great things because we are still too young. But we believe that if we do the little things that God wants us to do, we have the power to change the whole world. We want to discover and follow the little things God wants to do with us. So, I hope that the world that the Lord has made becomes a more beautiful place.

[마25:15, 새번역] 그는 각 사람의 능력을 따라, 한 사람에게는 다섯 달란트를 주고, 또 한 사람에게는 두 달란트를 주고, 또 다른 한 사람에게는 한 달란트를 주고 떠났다.

He decided how much each servant would be able to care for. He gave one servant five bags of money. He gave another servant two bags of money. And he gave a third servant one bag of money. Then the man left. 

Summary

옛날에 어떤 주인에게 세명의 종이 있었어요. 종은 주인에게 속해서 일을 돕고 또 주인의 보살핌을 받는 사람들이었지요. 이 주인이 멀리 오랫동안 여행을 떠나게 되었어요. 그때 세명의 종들에게 각각 한 사람에게는 5개의 금화 주머니를, 두번째 종에게는 2개의 금화 주머니를, 마지막 세번째 종에게는 1개의 금화 주머니를 맡기고 떠났습니다. 

Once upon a time, a master had three servants. Servants belonged to the master and were the ones who helped with the work and were looked after by the master. This owner has been on a long journey far away. Then he left the three servants, each with five bags of gold coins for one, two bags of gold coins with the second, and one bag of gold coins with the third servant.

주인이 그들에게 금화 주머니들을 맡긴 것은 종들이 좋은 일에 사용해서 이익도 얻을 수 있길 바랬지요.

주인이 돌아왔을 때 5개의 금화 주머니를 받았던 종은 그 금화로 장사를 해서 5개의 금화 주머니를 더 벌어들였습니다. 그러면 총 얼마가 되었지요? 맞아요 10개가 되었습니다. 주인은 크게 기뻐하며 칭찬했어요. 신실하고 착한 나의 종아 앞으로 너에게 더 많은 것을 맡기겠다며 좋아했어요.

The master entrusted them with pockets of gold coins, hoping that the servants could use them for a good cause and make a profit. When the master returned, the servant, who had been given five pockets of gold coins, used those gold coins, earning five more pockets of gold coins. So what was the total? That's right, there are 10. The owner was very happy and praised him and said “Good and faithful servant, in the future he will entrust more to you.”

두번째 종은 2개의 금화 주머니를 받았는데, 똑같이 장사를 해서 2개의 금화 주머니를 더 벌어들였습니다. 2개를 받았는데, 2개가 더 생겼으니 얼마지요? 맞아요 총 4개의 금화 주머니가 되었습니다.

주인은 똑같이 칭찬했어요! 

The second servant was given two bags of gold coins, and the same trade made two more bags of gold coins. He got 2, how much is 2 more? That's right, a total of 4 gold coin bags. The owner praised the same!

신실하고 착한 나의 종아 앞으로 너에게 더 많은 것을 맡기겠다며 좋아했어요.

The owner was very happy and praised him and said “Good and faithful servant, in the future he will entrust more to you.”

그런데, 세번째 종은 하나의 금화 주머니를 받고는 그걸 아무도 모르게 땅에다 묻어버렸습니다. 금화 한 주머니는 정말 큰 돈이거든요. 그걸 잃어버리기라도 하면 어떡하나. 도둑이 훔쳐가면 어떡하나? 이걸로 장사를 하려고 했다가 잘못해서 손해라도 보면 주인에게 크게 혼나게 될거야! 그래서 그는 역시 아무도 손을 대지 못하고, 잃어버리지도 않게 땅에다 묻어야겠어! 이렇게 생각해서 땅에 금화 주머니를 땅에다 묻어놨었지요.

However, the third servant took a bag of gold coins and buried it in the ground without anyone knowing. A bag of gold coins is a lot of money. What if I lose it? What if a thief steals it? If you try to do business with this and you make a mistake and lose money, you will be severely scolded by the owner! So he must also be buried in the ground so that no one can touch it and lose it! With this in mind, he buried a bag of gold coins in the ground.

그런데, 주인이 없는 동안 이 세번째 종은 점점 마음이 불편해졌을 거예요. 다른 두명의 종들이 돈을 점점 더 늘리고 있다는 걸 알았기 때문이죠. 자기가 받은 것은 그대로 땅에 묻혀있는데, 다른 종들은 받은 금화를 계속 늘리고 있으니 자기만 게으른 사람으로 보일 것 같아 불안하고 그 종들이 미워졌을거예요.

그러다가, 주인도 미워졌어요. 자기에게 금화를 맡긴 주인 때문에 자기가 괴로운 것이라고 생각했어요. ‘다 주인탓이다’ 라고 생각했죠.

However, while the master was away, this third servant must have become increasingly uncomfortable. Because he knew the other two servants were making more and more money. What he received is buried in the ground as it is, but the other servants are increasing the gold coins they have received, so they are worried that they will only look like a lazy person, and they must have hated them. Then, the owner also hated it. He thought he was in trouble because of the owner who had given him his gold coins. He thought it was all the owner's fault.

그래서 그는 주인에게 금화 주머니를 돌려주며.. “그동안 나를 이렇게 고통스럽게 했으니 당신은 참 나쁜 사람이에요. 내가 받은 건 이것 뿐이니 이걸 받으시고 나를 꾸짖지 마세요!”

So he returns the bag of gold coins to his owner. “You've caused me so much pain, so you're a bad person. This is all I got, so take this and don't scold me!”

주인은 황당했겠지요. 아직 아무말도 하지 않았는데, 종이 먼저 흥분하며 자기를 나쁜 사람이라고 비난을 했기 때문이죠.

The owner must have been frustrated. He hasn't said anything yet, because the servant got upset and accused him of being a bad person.

이 종은 뭐가 문제인가요?

오늘 말씀에 보면, 주인은 종들이 얼마 정도를 관리할 수 있는지 알고 그만큼 나눠 주었어요. 한 사람은 5개, 또 2개, 1개의 금화 주머니를 나눠주었지요.

다른 종들은 주인을 믿었어요. 주인이 내게 5개의 주머니를 맡겨주셨다면, 내가 잘 관리할 수 있을거야! 2개의 주머니를 받은 사람도 마찬가지였어요.

그런데, 한 개의 주머니를 받은 사람은 자기가 그 금화를 관리하거나 보관할 자신이 없었어요. 자기 자신도 믿지 못했고, 주인도 믿지 못했지요.

What's wrong with this servant? According to today's verse, the master knew how much the servants could manage and gave it to them accordingly. One servant got 5, then 2, 1 gold coin bags. The other two servants trusted their master’s judgment. If the owner gave me 5 pockets, I'd be able to take good care of it! So did the person who received the two pockets. However, the person who received one pocket was not confident in managing the gold coins. He did not trust himself, and he did not trust his master.

금화 주머니 한 개를 받았던 종은 바로 주인을 믿지 않았기 때문에, 결국 스스로 쫓겨나게 만들고 말았어요.

The servant who was given a bag of gold coins did not trust his master, so he made himself to be kicked out.

옛날에 이 금화 주머니를 달란트라고 불렀어요. 달란트는 지금 우리에겐 우리가 할 수 있는 재능, 능력을 뜻하지요.

At the time, this bag of gold coins was called a talent. Talent means the talents and abilities that we can do.

하나님은 우리 모두에게 크고 작은 능력을 주셨습니다. 그림을 그리거나, 글씨를 쓰거나, 사람들을 도울 수 있는 손도 주셨고, 말을 하거나 노래할 수 있는 목소리도 주셨고.. 다 하나님이 주신 것이죠. 어떤 사람은 힘이 더 세거나, 키가 더 클 수도 있어요. 또 다른 사람은 기억력이 더 좋거나 수학 계산을 더 빨리 하기도 하지요.

이런 모든 능력을 주신 분이 하나님이십니다. God has given us all great and small talents. He gave me a hand to draw, to write, to help people, and a voice to speak or sing... it's all God-given. Some people may be stronger or taller. Others have better memory or do math faster. It is God who gave all these powers.

하나님은 이런 능력을 우리가 땅에 파묻길 원하실까요? 아니면, 하나님과 함께 다른 사람들을 돕는 일에 사용하길 원하실까요?Does God want us to bury this power in the ground? Or would you like to use it to help others with God?

우리에게 주신 능력들은 모두 하나님과 함께 선한 일을 하기 위해서 주신 것입니다.

우리에게 그 능력을 주신 하나님을 믿고, 용기있게 그 능력을 사용해야 합니다.

나를 위해서가 아니라, 하나님을 생각하며, 하나님을 위해서 사용하면, 우리에게도 똑같은 칭찬을 하실거에요!All of the powers that have been given to us have been given to do good works with God. We must believe in the God who has given us that power and use it courageously. If you use it for God's sake, not for me, you'll get the same praise for us!

잘했구나! 착하고 충성된 나의 사랑하는 아들, 딸아! 나의 기쁨을 같이 누리자!
이제 내가 더 많은 것을 네게 맡기겠다!

Summary

For 3 weeks we have been talking about 4 different fields.

I hope all of us will be the fourth one, the good field.

지난 3주간 우리는 4가지 다른 밭에 대해서 보았어요.

저와 여러분 모두 네번째, 좋은 밭이 되길 소망합니다.

Last week, I said we are still working on it.

Just like LEGO, God has given us all the things we need to build something wonderful. 

지난 주에 우리는 모두 아직 Working on it 이라고 했지요.

마치 레고처럼 아직 완성되지 않았지만, 우리 안에 멋진 건물을 짓기 위해 필요한 것은 모두 있다고 했어요.

We can complete it with God’s various ways of help.

하나님이 여러가지 방법으로 도와주시면 우리는 멋지게 완성할 수 있을 거예요.

When you go to a LEGO store, how many kinds of LEGO sets are there?

Hundreds and thousands of different LEGO sets are there!

여러분이 레고 가게에 가보면, 얼마나 많은 종류의 레고가 있나요?

수백개, 수천개의 레고가 있지요?

What would be your favorite?

어떤게 여러분이 어떤 레고를 가장 좋아하나요?

You may like a big box with so much fancy stuff in it. Some LEGOs you can make it move, and control them. These are the pricey ones.

여러분은 엄청 큰 박스에 들어있는 팬시한 레고를 좋아하나요?

어떤 건 조종기로 움직이게 할 수도 있지요. 그런 건 값이 비싼 레고지요.

There are small simple LEGO sets too. 

그리고, 또 작고 단순한 레고 세트도 있어요.

All the different shapes and sizes of LEGOs are there, just like humans.

마치 사람들처럼 레고도 각각 모양도 크기도 다 다르죠.

Some people are very famous and rich, others are not as famous or rich.

어떤 사람들은 유명하고 부자라서 팬시한 것을 많이 가졌고,

다른 사람들은 그런 걸 갖지 못합니다.

Just like show windows of the LEGO store where the fanciest ones are usually on the display, many people look upto famous stars, and the rich. 

레고 가게의 창문에도 아주 크고 화려한, 팬시한 레고들이 전시된 것처럼,

사람들도 유명하고 돈이 많은 부자들을 부러워합니다.

People do not give much attention to simple, ordinary people.

사람들은 평범하고 부자가 아닌 사람들에 대해서는 별로 관심을 갖지 않지요.

Do you think God would do that too?

여러분 생각에, 하나님도 그럴 것 같나요?

Not at all.

전혀 아닙니다.

In fact, the disciples and close friends of Jesus were mostly not rich.

사실, 제자들과 예수님의 가까운 친구들은 대부분 부자들이 아니었어요.

Let me ask you a question.

Which is more important, life on the earth? Or in Heaven?

질문을 하나 해볼게요!

이 지구에서 살아가는 삶이 중요한가요? 아니면 천국의 삶이 더 중요한가요?

It is almost the same question of which is more important, the entrance of a house or the rooms in the house?

이건 마치 집으로 들어가는 입구와 집 자체를 비교하는 것과도 같아요.

The house itself is much more important than the entrance.

당연히 집 자체가 입구 보다 훨씬 중요합니다.

You only pass through the entrance quickly, then stay in the house and do all kinds of things there. 

입구는 금방 지나가버리지만, 집에서 우리는 정말 많은 것들을 하잖아요.

Being a fancy person on the earth is not a bad thing, but being a wonderful person in Heaven is far more important! Isn’t it?

마찬가지로, 지구에서 살아갈 때 팬시한 것이 나쁜 것은 아니지만,

천국에서 멋진 사람인 것이 비할 수 없이 더 중요한 것입니다. 그렇죠?

Do you know what makes you the most wonderful person in Heaven?

무엇이 여러분을 천국에서 가장 멋진 사람으로 만들어 주나요?

Let me explain with LEGO again.

레고로 다시 설명해볼게요.

It doesn’t matter how big or small or how expensive that is.

얼마나 큰지, 작은 지, 얼마나 비싼 것인지는 전혀 중요하지 않아요.

Only matter is how much you complete what God has given you!

중요한 것은 하나님이 우리에게 주신 것을 얼마나 잘 완성했는가! 거기에만 있어요.

Yes, that is the most important matter.

맞아요! 그게 가장 중요한 것이에요!

Like a parent gives a set of LEGO his/ her child can handle, God will give us lives fit for each one of us.

엄마나 아빠가 아이에게 맞는 레고를 선물하는 것처럼, 하나님도 우리 각자에게 꼭 맞는 삶을 주실 거예요.

So, do not compare yourself to others much.

How fancy does not matter to God.

그러니 다른 사람들과 비교하지 마세요.

얼마나 팬시한가는 하나님께 전혀 중요하지 않아요.

No matter how small or big the box is,

What God gives you is the best for you.

And everything you need to compete is in the box.

[막4:18-19]

18 또 어떤 이는 가시떨기에 뿌려진 자니 이들은 말씀을 듣기는 하되

19 세상의 염려와 재물의 유혹과 기타 욕심이 들어와 말씀을 막아 결실하지 못하게 되는 자요

[Mark 4:18-19, NIV]

18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word;

19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

Summary

We have been looking at different fields. The third one is a land with a lot of thorn bushes. 

우리는 지금까지 두가지 다른 밭들에 대해서 보았고, 오늘은 세번째 가시가 많은 풀밭을 볼 거예요.

Unlike the other two fields this one has good soil but has a lot of other bad weeds and thorn bushes.

이 땅은 다른 땅들과는 달리 좋은 흙이 있지만, 잡초들과 가시덤불들이 아주 많은 곳이에요.

So these bushes cover the Sun and two crowded fields choke the new plant so it cannot grow well. It cannot bear any fruit. It is still alive but only hardly survives. If the farmer leaves it that way, the plant will die eventually. 

이 덤불들이 햇볕을 가리고, 또 너무 잡초들이 많아서 이 풀은 잘 자랄 수가 없었죠. 당연히 열매도 맺을 수가 없어요. 겨우 살아있을 뿐이지만, 그냥 그대로 둔다면 결국은 죽어버릴 거예요.

Jesus said these thorn bushes represent too much worries and desire for money over God. These choke the word, making it unfruitful.

예수님은 가시덤불은 너무 걱정을 많이 하는 것, 그리고 돈을 하나님 보다 더 원하는 것이라고 하셨어요. 그런 걱정과 욕심이 하나님을 말씀이 마음에 남을 수 없게 만들어 버리는 거죠.

Jesus said do not worry too much about things in the world because God knows what we need. He also warns not to love money. 

예수님은 우리에게 너무 많은 걱정을 하지 말라고 하셨어요. 

왜냐면 하나님은 우리에게 꼭 필요한 것을 다 알고 계시기 때문이죠. 그리고 경고도 하셨어요. 돈을 사랑하지 말라고요!

So, we need to trust God about things we need, of course about money too.

그래서 우리는 하나님께서 우리에게 필요한 것을 아시고, 돈이 필요하다는 것도 아신다는 사실을 믿고 신뢰해야 해요.

Which of these fields represent your hearts?

Or, are your hearts like the good field?

이 세가지 밭 중에 어떤 곳이 여러분의 마음과 비슷한가요?

아니면, 여러분의 마음은 좋은 밭인가요?

Don’t be too discouraged about what your hearts used to be like.

여러분의 마음이 전에 어땠었는지 때문에 너무 실망하지 말아요.

Because you are working on it now!

이제 그 밭을 가꾸고 있기 때문이죠!

When you get a lego as a gift.

It shows what’s in it on the box.

When you open it, it looks totally different from the picture outside.

So the picture lies? No.

여러분이 레고를 선물로 받았다면, 박스에는 레고로 만든 멋진 건물 사진이 있어요. 그런데, 박스를 열어보면 어떻죠?

건물이 없잖아요? 아무런 모양이 없는 블럭들만 가득 있네요.

그럼 사진이 거짓말인가요? 아니죠.

All the things you need are there.

You just need to work on it by following the manual.

That is the fun part of the lego. Isn’t it?

이 건물을 만들기 위해 필요한 모든 것은 이미 다 들어있어요.

설명서를 잘 따라서 만들기만 하면 되는 것이죠.

그게 레고의 재미잖아요.

Just like that.

All the things we need to become how God wants us to be is with us already.

마찬가지로, 하나님이 원하는 모습이 되기 위해 필요한 것은 이미 우리에게 있어요.

So, to become a good land is absolutely possible.

우리가 좋은 땅이 되는 것은 당연히 가능합니다.

So, if you are not like the good soil yet, if you are working on it that is good. That is what God wants.

그래서 여러분이 아직 좋은 땅이 아니라고 하더라도, 지금 만들어가고 있다면, 잘하고 있는 거예요.  그게 주님이 원하시는 거예요.

Just like following the manual for LEGO building, when we follow the Bible, with God’s help you will be like the good field.

레고 빌딩을 잘 만들기 위해서 설명서를 잘 따라야 하는 것처럼, 하나님 말씀인 성경을 잘 따르면 하나님이 우리를 좋은 땅이 되게 해주실 거예요.

Don’t forget to pray for others who are also like these three not so good lands still.

우리 주변에 아직 좋은 땅이 아닌 사람들이 있다면, 누가 있을까요? 그들을 위해서 기도하는 것도 잊지 말아요!

Prayer

Dear God,

We might have been the field with many problems, but now we want to be the good field that bears good fruit.

Let’s not get discouraged too quickly when we see our fields are not good. Because we are working on it. We will soon be in a good field with various good fruits.

하나님,

그동안 우리는 좋은 밭이 아닐 때가 많았어요. 그러나 이제는 좋은 밭이 되어 좋은 열매를 맺고 싶습니다. 아직 좋은 밭이 아니라고 너무 실망하지 않게 해주세요. 지금 우리가 좋은 밭으로 되어져 가고 있다면이요. 우리도 곧 좋은 밭이 되어 많은 좋은 열매들을 맺을 것입니다.

17 그 속에 뿌리가 없어 잠깐 견디다가 말씀으로 인하여 환난이나 박해가 일어나는 때에는 곧 넘어지는 자요

16 Others are like the seed planted on rocky ground. They hear the teaching and quickly accept it with joy.
17 But they don’t allow the teaching to go deep into their lives. They keep it only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the teaching, they quickly give up.
[Mark 4:16-17]

Summary

지난 주에는 길 위에 뿌려진 씨앗에 대해서 생각해 봤지요. 그 땅에는 씨가 뿌리를 내릴 수 없었기 때문에, 씨들은 굴러다니다가 새들이 먹어버렸다고 했어요. 그것은 마치 하나님의 말씀을 들었지만 전혀 주의를 기울이지 않고 흘려서 들어 아무것도 남지 않은 사람과 같다고 했어요.

Last week we thought about the seeds sown on the road. Since the seeds could not take root in the land, the seeds rolled around and were eaten by the birds. It was like a person who heard the word of God, but poured it out without paying any attention to it, and had nothing left.

오늘은 조금 다른 땅에 대해서 볼거예요. 이 땅은 겉으로 보면 아주 좋은 땅으로 보여요. 흙도 촉촉하고 부드러운 땅이지요. 그런데, 이상한 일이 몇가지가 있어요.

Today we are going to look at a slightly different land. This land looks very good from the outside. The soil is also moist and soft. However, there are some strange things.

첫번째는 씨를 부리면 새싹이 정말 빨리 솟아 오른다는 거예요. 다른 어떤 땅 보다도 빨리 새싹이 나오니까 좋은 일 같은데, 두번째 이상한 일이 일어나요. 그건 싹이 난 후에 얼마 지나지 않아서 싹이 다 말라 버린다는 거예요. 

The first is that when you sow the seeds, the buds sprout really quickly. It seems like a good thing because it sprouts faster than any other land, but a second strange thing happens. That is, the shoots dry out shortly after they sprout.

농부는 이상하다고 생각했어요. 왜 자꾸 새싹이 금새 자라다가 곧 말라버릴까?
땅을 조사해보니 이유가 분명해졌어요. 그 땅은 좋은 땅이 아니었어요. 겉으로 보기에는 아주 촉촉하고 좋은 땅처럼 보였지만, 조금만 땅을 파보면 그 아래에는 아주 딱딱한 돌들만 가득했지요. 그래서 씨앗은 뿌리를 내리다가 딱딱한 돌을 발견하고는 빨리 싹을 피운 것이죠. 그러나, 얕은 흙은 정오의 뜨거운 태양에 금방 말라버렸어요. 그와 함께 새싹의 아주 작은 뿌리도, 또 그 새싹도 다 말라버렸어요. 

The farmer thought it was strange. Why do buds keep growing so quickly and then wither away?After examining the land, the reason became clear. The land was not good.From the outside, it looked like very moist and good soil, but after digging a little, there were only very hard stones underneath. So the seed took root and found a hard stone and sprouted quickly. However, the shallow soil dried up quickly in the hot noon sun. So the very small root of the sprout all dried up.

우리가 몇 주 전에 Sunday Christian 에 대해서 생각해 봤잖아요?
그 사람들은 아주 이상한 사람들이라고 했지요. 주일 - 일요일에 교회에 올 뿐 일주일에 다른 날들은 전혀 크리스천으로 살고 있지 않았어요. 

We've been thinking about ‘Sunday Christian’ a few weeks ago, right?They were very strange people. They only come to church on Sunday, but the other days of the week they are not living a Christian life at all.

그런데, 그 사람들이 어떻게 그날 하루는 크리스천처럼 생각이 들 수 있을까요?
아마도 이 얕은 흙이 덮인 사람들 일 것 같아요.

By the way, how can those people feel like a Christian one day?Maybe it's these shallow good soil-covered people.

하나님의 말씀인 씨가 떨어지면, 바로 기쁨으로 받아서 새싹까지 자라나는 거죠.
그런데, 집에 돌아갈 때가 되면 벌써 새싹은 말라버리고 생명도 없어져 버려요. 매주 똑같은 일이 반복될 수 있겠죠?

When the seed, the word of God, falls, they receive it with joy and grow up to a sprout.However, when it is time to return home, the sprout has already dried up and its life is gone.Could the same thing be repeated every week? 

그런데, 사실은 누구나 이런 마음의 밭이 될 때가 있어요. 겉으로는 잘 모르겠지만, 마음 안에 딱딱한 돌들이 가득한 그런 때가 있지요. 말씀을 듣고 잠깐은 힘도 나고 기쁨도 생기지만, 금새 사라져 버려요. 여러분도 그럴 때가 있지요?

However, the truth is, there are times when everyone becomes like this field. We don't know it from the outside, but there are times when our heart is full of hard stones. Hearing the Word gives you strength and joy for a while, but it disappears quickly. 

Do you have those times too?

어떻게 해야할까요? 

What should we do?

그 밭을 농부에게 맡겨드려야 할 거예요.
가장 먼저는 마음 밭에 그렇게 돌이 많다는 것을 알아야 하고, 감추고 있는 흙을 파내고, 돌들을 다 들어내야 합니다.

그 돌들은 탐심, 거짓말, 미움, 이기심, 불순종, 고집과 같은 것들이에요.

하나님께 우리 마음 안에 그런 돌들이 있으니 다 거둬내 주시길 기도하는 거예요.

You will have to leave the field to the farmer.First of all, you should know that there are so many stones in the field of your heart.
Jesus has to dig up the hidden soil and remove all the stones. Those stones are things like covetousness, lies, hatred, selfishness, disobedience, and stubbornness.We need to pray that God will take all these stones out of our hearts.

그러면, 선한 농부이신 하나님이 돌들을 거둬내고 아주 좋은 땅이 되게 해주실 거예요. 여러분 마음에 이런 돌들이 있다면, 오늘 기도합시다.
좋은 땅이 되어 말씀이 뿌리를 깊이 내리고, 좋은 열매를 맺는 튼튼한 나무 같은 사람이 되고 싶다고!

Then God, the good farmer, will remove the stones and make the land very good. If you have these stones in your heart, let's pray today. I want to become a good land, so that the Word can take root deeply, and I want to become a person like a strong tree with wonderful fruit!

하나님, 우리의 마음이 돌밭과 같을 있을 때가 있어요.

말씀을 들을 때에는 기쁘고 힘도 나는데, 조금만 지나면 다 잊어버리고 이기심이 생기고, 고집도 부리게 되고, 하나님께도 부모님께도 순종하고 싶지 않아질 때가 있습니다. 그런 때 우리의 마음에는 돌이 가득하다고 배웠습니다. 선한 농부이신 주님께 저희 마음 밭을 맡겨드립니다. 살짝 덮인 흙을 거둬내고 그 돌들을 꺼내 주세요. 욕심, 거짓말, 미움, 이기심, 불순종과 고집이라는 돌 덩어리들을 다 빼어버리고 겉 뿐만 아니라 안도 모두 좋은 흙과 같은 마음이 되게 해주세요.

우리를 아름답고 튼튼한 나무로 키우시고 열매 맺게 해주세요.

Dear God, 

there are times when our hearts are like a field of stones. When I listen to the Word, I feel happy and strong, but after a while, I forget everything and become selfish, stubborn, and sometimes I do not want to obey neither God nor my parents. At that time, we learned that our hearts are full of stones. We entrust our hearts to the Lord, the good farmer. Remove the lightly covered soil and take out the stones. Remove all the stones of greed, lies, hate, selfishness, disobedience, and stubbornness, and make your heart like good soil, both on the outside and on the inside. Let us grow into beautiful and strong trees and bear fruit. 

I pray in the name of Jesus, the good farmer.

The four types of soil #1

Today, we are going to read the Bible together as I teach you because the Bible verses are already kind of a sermon of Jesus Himself. So I will just read what Jesus said and give you a little more explanation.

1Another time Jesus began teaching by the lake. A great crowd gathered around him. So he got into a boat and went out on the lake. All the people stayed on the shore close to the water. 2Jesus used many stories to teach them. He said, 3“Listen! A farmer went out to plant his seed. 4While the farmer was planting, some seed fell by the road. The birds came and ate all that seed. 5Some seed fell on rocky ground where there wasn’t much dirt. The seed grew very fast there because the ground was not deep. 6But when the sun rose, the plants withered. The plants died because they did not have deep roots. 7Some other seed fell among thorny weeds. The weeds grew and choked the good plants. So those plants did not make grain. 8Some other seed fell on good ground. In the good ground, the seed began to grow. It grew and made a crop of grain. Some plants made 30 times more grain, some 60 times more grain, and some 100 times more grain.”

9Then Jesus said, “Let those with ears use them and listen!”

10Later, when Jesus was alone, the 12 apostles and others around him asked him about the stories.

11Jesus said, “Only you can know the secret truth about the kingdom of God. But to other people I tell everything by using stories. 12I do this so that:

‘They will look and look, but they will not learn.

They will listen and listen, but they will not understand.

If they did learn and understand,

they would come back to me and be forgiven.’” Isaiah 6:9-10

Jesus Explains the Seed Story

13Then Jesus said to the followers, “Do you understand this story? If you don’t, then how will you understand any story? 14The farmer is like a person who plants God’s teaching in people. 15Sometimes the teaching falls on the road. This is like some people. They hear the teaching of God. But Satan quickly comes and takes away the teaching that was planted in them.

Do you guys get it?

So there are four different grounds which means there are four different responses when they hear God's Word.

The first ground the seed fell was a road where people keep walking. 

It is a hard ground where seeds can never take root.

So seeds that fell there were eaten by birds quickly.

Nothing left. 

Jesus said the seeds were the teaching of God.

So you guys learn God’s word every week. 

That means the seed fell on your hearts.

Were these seeds planted well in you?

How long do you remember what you learn? If you do not carefully keep in your heart what you learn, your hearts are like the hard ground, like a road. No wonder no seeds could take root.

No plant can grow there. Nothing left.

No wonder that The word of God you learn doesn’t do anything in your life.

Why is this happening?

There are a few reasons behind it.

First, they thought they knew everything already. They think they do not need God’s Word.

Second, they have no interest in learning from God, so they do not care to listen.

Third, maybe it was a little too hard to understand for some of you.

What do you think you are like here?

Are you listening to me very well right now?

Yeah? What about last week? What do you remember about things you learned last week? If you cannot remember, what does that prove?

If you have trouble listening well, what you need to do is asking God to transform your hearts into a good ground. Jesus is the farmer who would totally change the ground! But we need to give ourselves to Jesus to do that. When you give yourselves to Jesus, He will change it into a good ground.

Then it will bear at least 30 times, or 60 times, or 100 times more fruit.

Now you learn the word of God today, how will you do with this seed this time? Will you keep this in your heart and think about it again, and again? Or just forget in a few hours.

Summary

There is a term called ‘Sunday Christian’.

Can you guess what that means? That means a person who is Chrstian only on Sundays. Do you think that’s possible?

썬데이 크리스천이라는 말이 있어요.

그게 어떤 의미인지 알겠어요? 주일에만 크리스천인 사람들을 뜻하는 말이겠죠.

그런데 그게 가능한가요?

We learned multiple times what Christian means! Very basic meaning is that we belong to Christ. We are people for Christ. So we are called Christian. 

크리스천이 무슨 뜻인지 배웠었지요. 가장 기본적인 의미는 그리스도에게 속한 사람들이라는 뜻이에요. Christ 를 위한 Christ 의 사람들이 Christian 이지요.

As we read from the Bible, He will never leave us, nor abandon us. 

That means once you are Christian you belong to Christ forever.

오늘 말씀처럼 하나님은 절대로 우리를 떠나거나, 버리지 않는다고 하셨어요.

그뜻은 한번 크리스천이 되면 영원히 예수님에게 속했다는 의미지요.

So once you are a Christian, you must be Christian not only Sundays but on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays.. You must be Christian everyday!

There cannot be such a thing as Sunday Christian.

그래서, 한번 크리스천이 되었다면, 주일뿐만이 아니라 월요일, 화요일, 수요일..매일 크리스천이어야 한다는 뜻이에요.

썬데이 크리스천은 있을수가 없다는 말이죠.

But oddly, there are a lot of people who call themselves Sunday Christians. Who are those people then?

그런데, 이상하게 정말 많은 사람들이 자기들을 썬데이 크리스천이라고 부릅니다. 이 사람들은 대체 누구죠?

I assume these people meant they act and live like Christians only on Sundays. More precisely meant they usually go to church on Sundays so that is the only thing they do as Christians. 

아마도 주일에만 크리스천으로 살고 있다는 뜻인 것 같아요.

더 정확하게 말하자면, 주일날에 교회에 가는 것을 크리스찬 답게 행동하는 유일한 일인 것이죠. 

So they think at least ‘I am Chstians on Sundays’. They might feel embarrassed to say they are Christians on Mondays, or any other days except on Sundays.

월요일이나 다른 날들에는 크리스천이라고 말하기에 좀 부끄럽지만, 일요일에는 최소한 내가 크리스천이라고 말할 수 있지. 이렇게 생각하는 것이죠.

So they think it is fair enough to say they are Sunday Christians.

Can you think of any one who is like that?

그래서 자신들을 썬데이 크리스천이라고 부르는 것 같아요.

주변에 혹시 그런 사람들 생각나는 사람이 있나요?

Here is the problem. 

그런데 문제가 있어요.

Being a Christian is not about doing something.

Just as being in the Bae family is not about doing something like the Bae family. When you were born into that family you became one of the Baes. That is how it works.

크리스천이 되는 것은 어떤 행동을 했기 때문이 아니에요.

배씨라는 성을 갖게 된 것은 그 집안에 태어났기 때문이지 배씨 집안다운 어떤 행동을 했기 때문이 아닌 것과 같습니다.

So it should be one way or another; you are a Christian everyday or you are not a Christian at all.

그래서 누구나 모든 날들에 다 크리스천이거나, 아니면 크리스천이 전혀 아니거나 둘 중에 하나일 수 밖에 없어요.

If someone lives like a Sunday Christian without trouble on the other days living like non-Christian they are probably not Christian at all.

만약에 어떤 사람이 썬데이 크리스천으로 살면서 다른 날에는 전혀 크리스천이 아니게 살아도 아무런 문제가 없다면, 그 사람은 아마 크리스천이 아닐 거에요.

Or, if someone lives like non-Christian most of the days in a week and his/her hearts are troubled from time to time he/she must be a Christian in trouble. You cannot live like that. It is like a plant trying to live without water or sunlight.

아니면, 크리스천 답게 살지 못할 때면 불편을 느낀다면, 그들은 지금 문제에 빠져있는 크리스천일거예요. 그렇게 계속 살 수는 없죠. 식물이 물이나 햇빛이 없이 살아보려고 하는 것과 같은 거예요. 

Either way, there cannot be Sunday Christians. But all Chrstians must be everyday Chrsistians and live like one.

어쨋든, 썬데이 크리스천이란 실제로 존재할 수 없어요. 모든 크리스천들은 매일 날마다 크리스천이어야 하고 크리스천 답게 살아야 합니다.

What is that? It doesn’t mean you gotta come to church every day. But you must come to God everyday. Think about Jesus, remember what you learned today, pray about things you wish for.

그게 어떤 걸까요? 매일 교회에 가야한다는 뜻이 아니에요. 그렇지만 하나님께 매일 나아가야 해요. 예수님에 대해서 생각하는 것, 오늘 주일에 배운 것을 기억하는 것, 또 삶에 많은 일들에 대해서 기도하는 거죠.

Then you will be more joyful and peaceful everyday!

as a result!

그러면, 매일 매일 여러분은 더 기쁨과 평안이 가득할 거예요.

[Mark 3:13, NIV] Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.

Summary

When Jesus was on the earth, who were the people He spent most of His time with? The 12 disciples. They were following Jesus wherever He went. 

예수님이 세상에 계실 때에 가장 많은 시간을 함께 보낸 사람들이 누구죠? 열두제자들이죠. 그들은 예수님이 가는 곳은 어디든 따라다녔어요.

Basically, a disciple means a person who learns from a teacher. It is similar to a student. There are few differences between a disciple and a student. A student is usually about learning knowledge like English, Math, Science. 

제자라는 단어의 뜻은 원래 선생님에게서 배우는 사람이라는 뜻이에요. 학생이랑 비슷한 뜻이죠. 제자와 학생은 조금 차이가 있어요. 학생은 주로 영어나, 수학이나 과학 같은 것을 배우는 사람을 뜻하지요.

But a disciple is learning almost everything about how the teacher lives. How to deal with problems, how to treat different people, and of course they learn the knowledge and wisdom of the teacher.

그런데, 제자는 선생님이 살아가는 방식을 전부 배우는 사람들이에요. 문제가 있을 때 어떻게 해결하시는지, 사람들을 어떻게 대하시는지, 그리고 물론 지식과 지혜도 선생님에게서 배우지요.

If you are a teacher who is to pick students to teach what kind of students would you like to pick? Because you have to teach them, you probably want someone who learns fast. Someone very smart.

여러분이 선생님이고 학생들을 고를 수 있다면, 어떤 학생들을 고를 것 같아요? 여러분이 가르쳐야 하니까, 빨리 배우는 그런 학생들을 고르고 싶겠죠?

So, do you think Jesus also picked His 12 disciples who were the smartest among the followers? 

그래서, 예수님도 그렇게 가장 똑똑한 사람들 열두명을 뽑으셨을까요?

Not really.

아니에요.

At the time, a lot of people could not go to school because they were poor and had to work from a young age. Most of Jesus’s disciples were poor and could not afford to go to school. At that time a lot of people could not even read and write and some disciples were like that.

옛날에는 아이들도 다 일을 해야해서 대부분 학교에 갈 수 없었어요. 예수님의 제자들도 역시 마찬가지였지요. 그래서 많은 사람들이 글을 읽고 쓰지 못했고 예수님의 제자들도 마찬가지였어요.

But, we know that huge crowds of people were following Jesus, and He was so popular after healed many sick people. In fact, among those thousands of people there must have been well educated smart people.

그렇지만, 많은 병자들이 고침을 받았기 때문에 엄청나게 많은 사람들이 예수님을 따르고 있었잖아요. 수만명의 사람 중에는 분명히 똑똑한 사람들도 있었을 거에요.

But Jesus still chose the twelve disciples with different qualities.

What are those qualities Jesus looked for?

그런데도 예수님은 다른 조건들을 가진 열두제자를 선택하셨어요. 

예수님이 찾는 사람들은 어떤 조건을 가진 사람들인가요?

It was humility, obedience, and love of God.

그건 겸손과, 순종과 하나님에 대한 사랑이었어요.

Humility is a characteristic that you see others as important.

Obedience is to listen and do what God says.

They must be the people who love God, and others.

겸손은 다른 사람도 소중하다는 것을 아는 것이에요.

순종은 하나님의 말씀을 잘 듣고, 그대로 행하는 것이에요.

그리고 물론 하나님과 사람을 사랑하는 사람이어야죠.

These are three characteristics we see from Jesus!

So, Humility, Obedience, and Love these are what God looks for from people. 

이 세가지 캐릭터는 바로 예수님의 캐릭터지요.

그래서 바로 겸손, 순종, 그리고 사랑이 하나님이 찾는 사람의 특징입니다.

Not the smartest, the greatest, the strongest.

A lot of times, these greatest forget to listen, and learn from others.

가장 똑똑하고, 위대하고, 가장 힘이 센 사람들이 아니에요.

이렇게 대단한 사람들은 다른 사람들의 말을 듣는 것을 잊어버리고, 다른 사람에게서 배우는 것을 잊을 때가 많아요.

Then they become the least favorite of God.

그래서 하나님이 기뻐하지 않는 사람이 되어버립니다.

In fact, God doesn’t need their great ability.

Because God is almighty.

사실 하나님은 그들의 대단한 능력을 필요로 하지 않아요.

왜냐하면 하나님은 위대하신 분이기 때문입니다.

So, He wants people who have humility, obedience, and love.

Because they will listen, follow and love Jesus well.

하나님은 겸손과 순종과 사랑의 사람들을 원하신다는 거죠.

그런 사람들이 잘 듣고, 잘 따르고, 예수님을 사랑하기 때문입니다.

And Jesus’s greatness will be appeared through those people at the end. Just like these disciples, the greatest and the most honored human beings in history.

그리고 결국은 예수님의 위대함이 그 사람들을 통해서 나타나게 되는 거에요. 바로 이 제자들처럼 가장 위대하고 존경받는 사람들이 되는 거죠.

If there are things you cannot do so well, don’t be too discouraged!

God can help you and use you for His Great works.

여러분이 뭔가를 잘 할 수 없어도, 너무 실망하지 말아요.

하나님은 여러분을 도울 수 있고, 하나님의 위대한 일에 쓰임받을 수 있습니다.

If you can do great things, remember if you forget humility because of what you can do well then it will make you the least at the end.

So, keep in mind what God is looking for!

그리고 여러분이 위대한 일을 할 수 있다면, 잊어서는 안되요! 겸손을 잃어버리면 여러분이 잘하는 그 일 때문에 가장 하찮은 사람이 되어버리는 거예요.

자, 기억하세요! 하나님이 찾으시는 것이 뭔지!

Dear  father,

We become arrogant so easily when we see we do better than others.

We become so discouraged when others do better than us. But we don’t want to be like that. What Jesus looks for in us is humility that we see others as important, and obedience that we listen to God well, and love God and others. Then God will show His greatness through those people. The 12 disciples were not great people but when they followed Jesus with humility, obedience, and love they became the greatest in Heaven forever. Let all of us remember the three things!

하나님 아버지,

우리는 우리보다 못하는 사람을 볼 때 금새 교만해집니다.

남들이 더 잘하면 금방 자신감을 잃어버립니다. 예수님은 우리가 다른 사람들을 우리만큼 소중하게 생각하길 원하셨고, 하나님의 말씀을 잘 듣는 순종하는 사람들이 되길 원하셨고, 하나님과 사람들을 사랑하길 원하셨습니다.

그러면 하나님의 위대함이 바로 그런 사람들을 통해서 나타날 것이라고 하셨습니다. 열두제자는 그렇게 대단한 사람들은 아니었지만, 겸손과 순종과 사랑으로 예수님을 따랐을 때 그들은 영원한 하나님 나라에서 가장 위대한 사람들이 되었습니다. 우리도 그 세가지를 기억하길 원합니다.

Bible Verses

[창5:2] 남자와 여자를 창조하셨고 그들이 창조되던 날에 하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시고 그들의 이름을 사람이라 일컬으셨더라

[Genesis 5:2, NIV] He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them "Mankind" when they were created.

Summary

The Bible says God created male and female. God called them ‘Mankind’.

So there are only two kinds of people ; male and female.

But there are people out there saying there are more than two kinds of people so called LGBTQ+.

성경은 하나님이 남자와 여자를 창조하셨다고 말합니다. 

하나님은 그들을 '인류'라고 부르셨습니다.

그래서 남성과 여성 두 종류의 사람만이 존재합니다.

하지만 LGBTQ+ 라고 불리는 사람들은 사람의 종류가 두 가지 이상 있다고 말합니다.

We have to understand this first.

We are living in a broken world. So many things are broken.

How do we know? We see earthquakes, hurricanes and wars.. and of course Coronavirus.

우리는 이것을 먼저 이해해야 합니다.

우리는 고장난 세상에 살고 있습니다. 

너무 많은 것들이 고장났습니다. 그걸 어떻게 알 수 있을까요? 

지진, 허리케인, 전쟁 등을 봐도 알 수 있고, 코로나바이러스도 그렇지요.

This world is obviously not perfect.

The Bible said the earth is broken because mankind has sinned against God.

We see a lot of evidence of the broken world.

이처럼 세상은 분명히 완벽하지 않습니다.

성경은 인류가 하나님께 죄를 지었기 때문에 땅이 고장났다고 말합니다. 세상이 고장났다는 증거는 정말 많지요.

Not only in the natural world, but also in the human body we see people with abnormalities. 

Some people have too many allergies that they cannot eat a lot of things, usually like peanuts.

Some people look normal but their mind is ill.

자연계뿐만 아니라 인체에도 이상이 있는 사람들을 볼 수 있습니다.

어떤 사람들은 너무 많은 알레르기를 가지고 있어 먹을 수 없는게 많습니다.

이렇게 몸이 고장난 사람들이 있고, 어떤 사람들은 정상처럼 보이지만 마음이 병든 사람들도 많아요.

God created a male and a female differently.

For example only a female can have a baby but she needs a male to become pregnant.

God created that way so they help each other to give birth, and to raise their children together. 

Not only that for taking care of nations, and taking care of the earth it is alway better to have male and female work together.

Because God created male and female to help each other and to depend on each other.

하나님은 남자와 여자를 서로 다르게 창조하셨습니다.

예를 들어 여성만이 아기를 가질 수 있지만, 임신하려면 또 남성이 필요합니다.

하나님께서 그렇게 만드셔서 그들이 함께 자녀를 키울 수 있도록 도우셨습니다.

부모로서 뿐만이 아니라, 나라를 돌보는 일, 지구를 돌보는 모든 일에 남자와 여자가 함께 힘을 모아야 더 잘 돌볼 수 있습니다.

하나님이 그렇게 남자와 여자가 서로가 필요하고 서로 돕도록 창조하셨기 때문입니다.

But there are men who think and feel differently from other usual men. Same is true with women.

They may dress like men and behave like them too.

Because it may not be their wish to be that way, we shouldn’t look down or make fun of them. We must not do that.

하지만 보통 남자들과 다른 생각과 감정을 가진 남자들이 있고, 여성도 마찬가지입니다.

그들은 여자지만 남자처럼 옷을 입고 그들처럼 행동할 수도 있습니다.

그런 사람들을 만난다면 절대로 얕잡아보거나 조롱해서는 안 됩니다. 

But you also need to know what a man is like, and what a woman is like.

그러나 여러분은 또한 남자에 대해서, 여자에 대해서 서로 어떤 차이가 있는지에 대해서 알아야 합니다.

Remember that because of human sin the world is broken. Many things became abnormal. But Jesus got all the punishments of human sin, so those who believe in Him, now become a new creature, so with the new life Jesus gave to us, we can be closer to a better man and a better woman. We may not be completely perfect yet. But we can be closer to how God wants us to be as a boy and as a girl. As a man and as a woman.

인간의 죄로 인해 세상이 망가졌음을 기억하십시오. 

많은 것들이 비정상이 되었습니다. 남자와 여자도 정상적이지 않은 사람들이 많아졌습니다.

그러나 우리에게는 소망이 있습니다.

예수님은 사람의 죄의 모든 형벌을 받으셨으므로 그를 믿는 자는 누구든지 소망을 가집니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 주신 새 생명으로 우리는 더 올바른 모습의 남자와 더 올바른 모습의 여자가 될 수 있습니다. 완전하지 않아도 우리는 하나님께서 우리가 소년과 소녀가 되기를 원하시는 모습에 더 가까워질 수 있습니다. 

We should not accuse others if they do not know Jesus yet and are confused about who they are. They may believe they are neither male nor female, but they are actually one of them. Their minds are confused. We should not accuse or argue about how they think about themselves.

누군가가 아직 예수님을 알지 못하고 자신이 누구인지 혼란스럽다고 해서 다른 사람을 비난해서는 안 됩니다. 그들은 자신이 남성도 여성도 아니라고 생각할지 모르지만 그들 중 하나입니다. 그들의 마음은 혼란스럽습니다. 우리는 그들이 자신에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지에 대해 비난하거나 논쟁해서는 안 됩니다.

But we should hope and pray for those people so that they can find the right identity to be a man or a woman.

그러나 우리는 그 사람들이 남자든 여자든 올바른 정체성을 찾을 수 있도록 희망하고 기도해야 합니다.

If you have any concern or questions about these issues you must talk to your parents or to me. We will discuss the issue together. Because this issue is very important for us and for God.

이러한 문제에 대해 고민이 있으면 부모님과 목사인 저에게 꼭 이야기해야 합니다. 우리는 그 문제를 함께 대화하며 풀어갈 것입니다. 이 문제는 우리에게도, 하나님에게도 매우 중요하기 때문입니다.

Dear Father,

You created us male and female to help each other. In order to help one another we should know who male is, and who the female is. There is so much confusion about male, female, and all the other gender terms recently invented. Lord, as you are restoring your kingdom on the earth, let us see the restoration of your order of Creation. Your order is the best way for all of us.

We love to see your order being restored that males like Godly men, females become Godly women.

[Galatians 4:6, NIV] Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."

Summary

We all have a father. And we all know no father is perfect.

Our fathers are not perfect. They make mistakes.

If we think our fathers are imperfect, 

then there must be a perfect father somewhere. Isn’t it?

우리 모두에겐 아빠가 있지요. 그리고 어떤 아빠도 완벽하진 않아요.

아빠들이 완벽하지 않다고 생각한다면, 어딘가에 완벽한 아빠도 있다는 의미이죠.

Let’s imagine a moment.

If there is a perfect father, what would he be like?

I am not talking about your best wish that a daddy buys you everything you want. A father lets you do whatever you want to do.

He is not a good father.

한번 상상해봐요. 어딘가에 완벽한 아빠가 있다면, 그는 어떤 분일까요?

뭐든지 원하는 걸 다 사주는 그런 아빠를 말하는 게 아니에요.

원하는 건 뭐든지 하게 해주는 그런 아빠?

그런 아빠는 좋은 아빠가 전혀 아니죠.

Imagine there is a perfect father.

What do you think he is like? 

How would you describe him?

어딘가에 완벽한 아빠가 있다고 상상해봐요.

그는 어떤 분일까요? 어떤 분 일 것 같은지 한번 설명해보세요.

내 생각엔 이런 분일 것 같아요. 

I think he must be like..

Strong like a mountain. A man like a tree.

Warm like sunlight in the summer?

Peaceful like carm ocean.

A man with everlasting patience.

산처럼 힘이 세고, 나무 같은 멋진 분일 것 같아요.

여름 햇살처럼 따뜻한 분이고,

고요한 바다처럼 평화로운 분이겠죠.

영원히 참을성이 있는 분일 것 같죠.

또 뭐가 있을까요?

What Else?

God has many names, like Yahwe, Immanuel, Jesus, and so on.

To me one of the most beautiful names of God is ‘father’.

We call God, ‘Father’. And he is the perfect father.

하나님은 많은 이름이 있어요, 야훼, 임마누엘, 예수 등.

그중에 정말 아름다운 이름이 바로 ‘아버지' 라는 호칭이에요.

우리는 하나님을 아버지라고 부르죠. 그분이야말로 완벽한 아버지에요.

Father protects family like a fence, and discipline the children to be a better person. 

아버지는 울타리가 되어 가족들을 보호하고, 자녀들을 바르게 자라도록 가르치는 사람이에요.

Your father might be doing it well or fail to do it often.

여러분의 아빠는 그 역할을 잘 할 수도 있고, 잘못할 때가 많을 수도 있어요.

Just like we make mistakes that we couldn’t do well as the children of God. 우리가 실수하고 하나님의 자녀들 답게 살지 못할 때가 있는 것과 같아요. 

We humans are image bearers of Creator, fathers are specifically image bearers of God the Father. They show God the Father very well sometimes, but not all the time. I know for sure, as a father of two kids here, I myself make mistakes. My hope and prayer is that you can see God the Father through me more often as a father and a pastor.

우리 사람들이 창조주의 모습을 닮은 것처럼, 아빠들은 하나님 아버지의 모습을 담고 있어요. 그래서 어떤때는 하나님 아버지의 모습을 잘 나타낼 때도 있지요. 물론 항상 그렇지는 못해요. 저도 두 아이의 아빠이기 때문에 너무 잘 알아요. 실수할 때가 많이 있거든요. 그래도 제 소망은 우리 아이들에게, 여러분에게도 아버지의 모습을 더 자주 보여줄 수 있길 기도하고 있어요. 

More importantly though, I pray that you remember God the Father is not like me. He will not make mistakes. He will not disappoint you.

그런데, 그것보다 더 중요한게 있어요. 여러분이 하나님 아버지는 나와 같은 아빠들과는 다르다는 것을 기억하는 거에요. 하나님은 실수가 없으시고, 하나님은 여러분을 실망시키지 않으실 거예요. 

His answer may not be what you wish for, but that does not mean that answer is not good for you. His answer is always right. He will always give you the best. Because He is our Father who loves us more than any mother of any father in the world.

하나님도 여러분이 원하는 것을 주지 않으실 때가 있지만, 그건 여러분이 원하는 것이 사실은 좋은 것이 아니기 때문이에요. 하나님은 항상 옳아요. 하나님은 여러분에게 가장 좋은 것을 주실 거예요. 왜냐하면, 하나님 아버지는 세상의 어떤 엄마보다, 아빠보다도 우리를 더 사랑하시기 때문이에요.

So, when we are disappointed by the mother or the father, we should seek God more and pray to Him. He will comfort us, and will restore our peace.

그래서 엄마나 아빠에게 실망하고 속상할 때 우리는 오히려 더 하나님을 찾고, 하나님께 기도해야 해요. 우리를 더 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지가 우리 마음에 위로와 평안을 반드시 주실 거예요.

[Matthew 23:28, NLT] Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Summary

When we read Bible stories there are people called Pharisees that always come up.  

They seem like bad people. Because, they always conflict against Jesus.

But, almost nobody thought they were bad people at that time.

In fact, they were the most honored, respected people in the society.

우리가 성경 이야기를 읽을 때 항상 등장하는 바리새인이라는 사람들이 있습니다.

그들은 나쁜 사람들처럼 보입니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 항상 예수님을 대적하기 때문입니다.

그러나 그 당시에는 그들이 나쁜 사람들이라고 생각하는 사람이 거의 없었습니다.

사실 그들은 사회에서 가장 존경받는 사람들이었습니다.

The name ‘Pharisees’ translated into English ‘Separated’ which means ‘Godly and holy’.

They did everything so right. They worshiped God very often. They studied the Bible very hard. They gave money to the poor.

For 2 days a week they only prayed all day without even eating a meal.

So everyone feels small before them. Because they always do more than anyone else. They were upright people.

So they were very well respected.

'바리새인'이라는 이름은 영어로 '분리된'으로 번역되어 '경건하고 거룩하다'는 뜻입니다.그들은 모든 것을 올바르게 했습니다. 그들은 하나님을 아주 자주 경배했습니다. 그들은 성경을 아주 열심히 공부했습니다. 그들은 가난한 사람들에게 돈을 주었습니다.

일주일에 이틀이나 밥도 먹지 않고 기도만 할 정도였지요.

그래서 모든 사람이 그들 앞에 작게 느껴질 정도였어요. 

그들은 항상 다른 사람보다 더 많은 일을 하기 때문입니다. 

그들은 누가봐도 올바른 사람들이었고, 모두에게 존경받았습니다.

But then, why was Jesus so unhappy with these Godly people?

And why did these Pharisees hate Jesus so much?

그런데 왜 예수님은 이 거룩한 사람들을 그토록 불쾌하게 여기셨습니까?그리고 이 바리새인들이 예수님을 그토록 미워한 이유는 무엇입니까?

Because, Jesus saw the truth about them.

Outwardly, by appearance, they look like Godly people and honor God so much. But, the reason they did all these good things is because they want to be respected. They wanted to be popular. They wanted to be higher than others by doing all these things.

예수님은 그들에 대한 진실을 보았기 때문입니다.겉으로 보기에는 경건한 사람처럼 보이고 하나님을 너무 honor 하는 것 같았죠. 하지만 그들이 이 모든 좋은 일을 한 이유는 자기들이 존경받고 싶었기 때문입니다. 그들은 인기를 원했습니다. 그들은 이 모든 일을 함으로써 다른 사람들보다 더 높아지기를 원했습니다.

It was not for God at all.

It was only for themselves.

So basically, they were lying to everyone by pretending.

Worse, they were lying and pretending before God.

That is a really really bad idea.

그것은 전혀 하나님을 위한 것이 아니었습니다.오직 자신을 위한 것이었습니다.그래서 기본적으로 그들은 가장하여 모두에게 거짓말을 하고 있었습니다.더군다나 그들은 하나님 앞에서 거짓말을 하고 연기를 했습니다.정말 잘못된 것이죠.

Everyone was fooled by their pretending but Jesus.

That is why Jesus could not stand with these people.

And Pharisees hated Jesus because they were caught lying by Him.

So they wanted to kill Jesus.

예수님을 제외한 모든 사람들이 그들의 가장에 속았습니다.

그래서 예수님은 이 사람들을 참아줄 수 없었습니다.

그리고 바리새인들은 예수님에게 거짓말을 하는 것이 들렸기 

때문에 예수님을 미워했습니다.

그래서 그들은 예수님을 죽이려고 했습니다.

For Jesus, who sees all the Truth

People who were called sinners were better than Pharisees who were called Godly people. Because, at least these sinners knew they were wrong, and they needed God’s mercy. But, these Pharisees thought they deserve God’s blessings so God must bless them.

모든 진리를 보시는 예수님에게는죄인이라고 하는 사람들이 경건한 사람들이라고 하는 바리새인보다 나았습니다. 적어도 이 죄인들은 자신이 틀렸다는 것을 알았고 하나님의 자비가 필요했습니다. 그러나 이 바리새인들은 그들이 하나님의 축복을 받을 자격이 있으므로 하나님께서 그들에게 복을 주셔야 한다고 생각했습니다.

You see, we have to be honest with God. That is the most Godly thing and the way we honor God.

He knows the Truth. Even if you made mistakes you shouldn’t pretend before God. Tell Him the truth in prayer and ask for forgiveness.

And next time try to make less mistakes by praying to God.

He will help you. People who do it again and again until they become better are truly Godly people.

우리는 하나님께 정직해야 합니다. 그것이야말로 가장 경건하고 우리가 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 방법입니다.그는 진실을 알고 있다. 실수를 해도 하나님 앞에서 가장하지 말아야 합니다.

아마 학교에서는 숙제를 하는 것? 시험을 보는 것? 그런 것들이 중요하겠죠?Maybe doing homework? taking the exam at school? Those things are important, right?

When you go to exercise or play with your friends, there will be important things to do as friends. However, there is something more important than all of that.

웨스트민스터 소요리문답인데요, 여기에서 이렇게 말하고 있어요.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism is what many pastors who studied the Bible diligently gathered to organize what is most important to people.

“사람의 제일 되는 목적은 

하나님을 영화롭게 하고 영원토록 그분을 즐거워하는 것입니다.”

“Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”

어떻게 하나님을 영화롭게 하고, 영원토록 그분을 즐거워 할 수 있을까요?

How can we glorify God and enjoy Him forever?

첫째로는, 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 예배를 잘 드리는 것이에요!

무엇보다도 예배를 사랑하는 사람이 되어야 겠지요!

First, it is a good way to worship that glorifies God! 

Above all else, you must become a person who loves worship!

주일은 7일 중에 가장 중요한 날이에요. 우리가 모여서 예배하고, 다른 날들 보다 더 많은 시간 하나님을 생각하는 날이기 때문이에요.Sunday is the most important day of the 7 days.

Because it is a day when we gather to worship and think about God more than other days.

그렇지만, 다른 모든 날들에도 하나님을 생각해야 해요. 성경은 먹을 때에도, 마실 때에도, 무슨 일을 하던지 하나님을 위해서 하라고 하셨지요? 

However, on all other days, we must think of God. The Bible tells us to do it for God, whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do for God!

그 말은, 항상 함께 하고 계시는 하나님을 생각하면서 말하고 행동하라는 뜻이에요.

It means to speak and act while thinking of God who is always with you.

하나님과 함께 말하고, 생각하고, 행동하는 것! 그러면 실수도 훨씬 줄게 되고, 더 착하고, 용감하고, 멋진 사람이 될 수 있겠죠. 예수님이 함께 해주시니까요!

Talking, Thinking, and Acting with God! You'll make a lot less mistakes, and you'll be a nicer, braver person. Because Jesus is with you!

십자가는 사랑이라고 우리가 배웠지요. 

그래서 예수님을 믿는 그리스도인들도 사랑의 사람들이라고 했어요.

하나님을 사랑하고, 이웃들을 사랑하는 사람들이지요.

We have been taught that the cross is love.That is why Christians who believe in Jesus are said to be people of love.People who love God and love their neighbors.

사랑에도 종류가 많은데, 십자가는 특히 어떤 사랑을 말하는 것인가요? 

예수님이 십자가에 달리신 이유를 생각해보면 되겠지요? 우리의 모든 죄를 용서하셔서 깨끗하고 죄가 없는 하나님의 아들, 딸들이 되게 해주시기 위해서 대신 벌을 받으신 것이죠.

Summary

Let’s imagine the moment we arrive in Heaven. Everyone will be so excited and happy. And there will be people who will be too excited to calm themselves down. They will be jumping and running and hugging everyone.

우리가 천국에 막 도착했을 때를 한번 상상해 봐요.

모두가 정말 신나고 행복할 거예요.

그런데, 그중에 어떤 사람들은 너무 흥분해서 참지 못하고 막 뛰어다니고, 점프를 하고 사람들을 다 허그하며 다니는 사람들이 있을 거예요.

I know at least one person who would do exactly what I just said.

His name is Nick vuicici.

저는 그중에 한 사람이 누구인지 확실히 알아요.

바로 닉부이치치라는 사람이에요.

닉의 이야기를 먼저 들어봅시다.

Let’s listen to his story.

When anyone looks at him first, they will think it is so unfortunate. His life can be any good. For sure, he cannot do anything.

누가 그를 처음 보았다면, 그는 참 불행한 사람이고, 아주 심각한 장애인이구나 라고만 생각할 거예요. 그의 삶은 좋은 일이 있을 것 같지 않겠죠. 당연히 아무일도 할 수 없을 거라고 생각할 거예요.

But, we all just witnessed that he could do even greater things than most people who have arms and legs. Isn’t it amazing?

Isn’t this a miracle?

그렇지만, 우리가 모두 본 것처럼, 그는 정말 엄청난 일을 하고 있어요. 팔다리를 다 가진 사람들도 할 수 없는 일을 하고 있지요? 정말 대단하지 않나요?

이런게 바로 기적이죠.

He could do all these things because he didn’t listen to negative thoughts, but God.

닉이 이렇게 멋진 삶을 살 수 있었던 것은, 그가 부정적인 생각이 아니라 하나님에게 귀를 기울였기 때문이에요.

He can be so courageous because he knows he will be in Heaven with God forever.

그가 이렇게 용감할 수 있었던 것은 그가 천국에 갈 것이고, 영원히 사랑하는 하나님과 함께 살 것을 믿었기 때문이에요.

Because he knows God loves him. 

하나님이 닉을 얼마나 사랑하는지 잘 알았죠.

He knows God has a plan for his life.

하나님이 닉을 향한 계획이 있다는 것을 믿었어요.

When no one can see any good from his appearance, God says otherwise. And He believes what God says.

그의 외모를 보면, 아무런 좋은 것이 없어보이지만,

하나님은 반대로 말씀하셨고, 닉은 하나님이 말씀하신 것을 믿었어요.

Although most of us do not have big problems like Nick, we may have small issues people may not notice. Those shortcomings seem no good, but in God these weaknesses can become our strength.

우리들 중에 닉처럼 심각한 문제를 가진 사람은 없어요.

그렇지만 다른 사람들은 잘 모르는 작은 문제들은 아마 누구에게나 있을 수 있어요.

그런 약점들은 전혀 좋아보이지 않죠. 그러나 하나님을 믿는 우리에게는 약점들도 강점이 될 수 있는 거예요. 

How is it possible? 어떻게 그럴 수 있을까요?

Think about Nick. He needs help most of the time so he has to think about God. He had to pray to God for help for almost everything.

닉을 생각해 보세요. 닉은 대부분의 시간 도움이 필요하기 때문에 그때마다 하나님을 생각하고, 하나님께 기도할 수 밖에 없겠죠.

When things go well, praise the Lord,

When there is trouble, ask God for help.

그래서 좋은 일이 일어나면 여러분도 하나님을 찬양하세요.

그리고 문제가 생기면, 하나님께 도움을 구하세요.

Then your weaknesses will also become your strength in God.

그러면 그 약함이 하나님 안에서 여러분의 강점이 될 거예요.

For God give gifts who earnestly seek Him!

하나님은 그를 열심으로 찾는 사람들에게 선물을 주시기 때문입니다.

하나님, 우리에게 건강한 몸과 또 우리를 항상 사랑하는 가족들, 선생님들, 교회를 선물해 주셔서 감사합니다. 가장 감사한 것은 우리에게 천국을 주신 것입니다. 천국을 믿기 때문에 어려운 일도 더 용감하게 도전할 수 있고, 다른 사람들 더 사랑할 수도 있습니다. 내게 있는 약한 점들이 강한 것이 될 수도 있음을 알았습니다. 닉이 많은 불편이 있었지만, 하나님을 믿고 놀라운 일들을 한 것과 같이 우리도 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 보여주는 삶이 되도록 축복해주세요.

God, thank you for giving us a healthy body and always loving family, teachers, and church family. The most grateful thing is that he has given us heaven. 많은 사람들이 예수님을 쫓아와서 인기가 아주 많아졌는데, 예수님은 다른 마을로 가자고 하셨어요.

Many people followed Jesus and He became very popular, but Jesus wanted to go to another village.

예수님은 내 목적은 그것이 아니라고 말씀하셨지요.

Jesus said that was not his purpose.

누군가가 뭔가를 만들었다면 언제나 목적이 있어요.

When someone creates something, there is always a purpose.

하나님이 우리를 창조하셨기 때문에 이 땅에 태어난 우리 모두는 목적을 갖고 있어요. 인생은 그 목적을 발견해 나아가는 과정과 또 이루어 가는 과정이라고 볼 수 있지요.

All of us born on this earth have a purpose because God created us. So Life is a process of discovering and progressing toward that purpose.

하나님이 우리의 얼굴도 다 다르고, 좋아하는 음식, 좋아하는 책도 다르고, 잘 하는 것도 다르게 지으셨어요.

God created each of us with different faces, different foods we like, different books we like, and different things we do well.

이렇게 다 다르게 생겼지만 우리는 모두 하나님의 자녀들이고 그래서 하나님을 아버지라고 부릅니다.

Although we all look different, we are all children of God, so we call God our Father.

그렇지만, 하나님은 사람이 아니기 때문에 꼭 아빠 같기만 한 것은 아니에요. 성경은 내가 너를 낳았다. 이렇게 엄마가 아기를 낳을 때 쓰는 표현도 쓰고 있어요. 그래서 하나님은 우리에게 아빠 같기도 하고, 엄마 같기도 한 분이에요.

However, because God is not a human being, he is not necessarily just like a father. The Bible says I begot you. I also use expressions that mothers use when giving birth to babies. So, God is like a father to us and like a mother.

그렇다면, 하나님은 우리를 어떤 목적으로 창조하셨을까요? 다른 말로, 여러분은 어떤 목적을 갖고 세상에 태어났을까요? 

So, for what purpose did God create us? In other words, for what purpose were you born into the world?

여러분 중에 어떤 사람은 대통령이나 정치인과 같은 사회를 위해 일하는 사람들이 될 수도 있을 것이고, 또 어떤 사람은 선생님처럼 아이들을 가르치는 일을 할 수도 있고, 의사나 간호사 처럼 아픈 사람들을 돌 볼 수도 있고, 스포츠 선수가 될 수도 있을 거에요. 목사님처럼 하나님의 말씀을 전하고 가르치는 사람이 될 수도 있겠죠.

Some of you might be people working for society like the president or politician, some of you might be teaching children like a teacher, caring for the sick like a doctor or a nurse, or a sports player. You can become a person who preaches and teaches the word of God like me.

아름답고 편한 옷을 디자인하는 디자이너가 되거나, 복잡한 돈 문제를 도와주는 은행에서 일을 할 수도 있겠죠.

You could be a designer designing beautiful and comfortable clothes, or work in a bank that helps people with complicated money matters.

사람들이 간절히 기다리고 있는 선물이나 편지를 전해주는 일을 할 수도 있겠지요.

Maybe it's the job of delivering the long-awaited gift or letter.

어떤 일은 사람들이 다 보는 곳에서 이뤄지고, 칭찬과 환호를 받기도 합니다.

Some work is done in the public eye, and sometimes it is praised and cheered.

그러나 또 어떤 일은 아무도 보지 않는 곳에서 이뤄지지만 모두가 꼭 필요하답니다.

And there are other things that no one sees, but everyone needs them.

세상에 태어난 모든 사람은 서로가 필요해요.

Everyone born into the world needs each other.

그래서 어떤 직업을 갖게 되던지, 어떤 일을 하게 되던지 모두가 가진 똑같은 공통의 목적이 있답니다.

So no matter what kind of job you get or what kind of job you do, everyone has the same purpose in common.

그것은 같은 하늘 아버지를 가진 좋은 형제, 자매가 되는 것이에요. 무슨 이를 하더라도 서로를 돕는다는 마음으로 하나님 아버지와 그의 아들, 딸들을 사랑하는 마음으로 하면 뭐든 더욱 아름다운 결과를 만들어 낼 거에요. 

It is to become good brothers and sisters who have the same heavenly father. Whatever you do, if you do it with love for Heavenly Father and his sons and daughters with a heart of helping each other, anything will produce more beautiful results.

바로 그것이 우리가 세상에 태어난 가장 중요한 이유입니다.

That is the most important reason we were born into this world.

그 목적을 이루며 살아갈 때 우리는 어떤 상황에서도 평안과 기쁨을 누릴 수 있고, 서로가 서로에게 기쁨을 줄 수 있습니다.

When we live fulfilling that purpose, we can enjoy peace and joy in any situation, and we can give joy to each other.

Remember, JOY!

Jesus first, 

Others second,

Yourself third. 

In that order your true Joy, Joy of Jesus will be everlasting.

dear God,
Thank you for blessing our children to be born and raised in a world of peace and abundance. I pray that our children will lead a beautiful and wonderful life according to the purpose the Lord has created, and that they will be able to follow along. And the most important purpose as children of God, please help us to love each other more with the heart of loving Heavenly Father. So, let the joy of God overflow in our lives.

Summary

Do you remember we talked about how Mary was specially loved by Jesus?

지난 성금요일에 예수님은 마리아를 특별히 사랑하셨다고 말했죠?

God is supposed to love everyone fairly.

하나님은 모두를 똑같이 사랑하신다고 했는데,

어떻게 예수님은 한 사람을 특별히 더 사랑하실 수 있는가?

How come Jesus loves one person over others.

How come God has favoritism. 

어떻게 하나님이 차별을 하실 수 있는가?

It is unfair!

The Bible clearly states that God loves everyone fairly.

God has no favoritism!

성경은 하나님은 모두를 똑같이, 공평하게 사랑하신다고 말씀하셨잖아요!

How could this happen then?

One day,

When Mary came to Jesus and pour a precious perfume on Him,

All the people, even Jesus’s own disciples were so upset accusing Mary of wasting the perfume.

마리아가 귀한 향유를 예수님께 부었을 때, 모든 사람들, 심지어 예수님의 제자들까지도 분노하면서 향유를 낭비하지 말라고 소리쳤다.

But, Jesus said this. 그러나, 예수님은 이렇게 말했다.

[Luke 7:41-42, NLT]

41 Then Jesus told him this story: 

"A man loaned money to two people—

500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other.

42 But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?"

41 "어떤 돈놀이꾼에게 빚진 사람 둘이 있었는데, 한 사람은 오백 데나리온을 빚지고, 또 한 사람은 오십 데나리온을 빚졌다.

42 둘이 다 갚을 길이 없으므로, 돈놀이꾼은 둘에게 빚을 없애주었다. 그러면 그 두 사람 가운데서 누가 그를 더 사랑하겠느냐?"

So in this case, Mary loves Jesus the most.

그래서 마리아가 예수님을 누구보다 사랑한 것이다.

Because she believes her debt, her sins were so great but forgiven.

마리아는 자신의 죄가 너무나 크고 끔찍한 것인데, 그게 용서받았다고 믿었기 때문이다. 용서받지 못했다면, 당연히 지옥에 갈 운명이었는데!

이제 용서받고 천국을, 영생을 받았기 때문이다.

She must have been going to Hell otherwise, but now she is forgiven and received Heaven, the Eternal life.

마리아의 예수님에 대한 사랑은 영원한 생명의 크기였다.

Her love for Jesus is about the size of Eternal Life.

Size of Eternal Life.

So, to Mary nothing for Jesus! can be considered a waste.

그래서, 마리아에게 있어서, 예수님께는 아까운게 아무것도 없었던 것이다.

What is the size of grace others receive from Jesus then?

그들이 예수님께 받은 은혜의 크기는 마리아가 받은 것 보다 정말로 작은가?

Is it any smaller than the one Mary received?

No!

But they were not as thankful as Mary did.

그러나, 누구도 마리아 만큼 주님께 감사하지 않았다.

In fact, everyone, even other disciples, thought they must deserve God’s love at least more than Mary.

사실상, 제자들을 포함한 모든 사람들이 자신들은 이런 더러운 여인 보다는 하나님께 사랑받을 자격이 있다고 여겼다.

그래서, 그들은 마리아 보다 덜 감사했고, 주님께 드리는 것을 아까워했고,

그렇게 그들은 예수님을 덜! 사랑했다.

So, they were less grateful than Mary, and regretted giving to the Lord, and thus they loved Jesus less.

Jesus confirms Mary loved Him the most.

예수님이 직접 확인해 주셨다. 마리아가 예수님을 가장 사랑했다고..

Because she was the one who realized how great the grace she received from Jesus!

바로 마리아가, 예수님께 받은 은총이 가장 크다고 믿은 사람이었기 때문이다.

Then for her!

receiving the greatest love is not unfair.

Is it unfair? No.

이게 불공평한 것인가? 아니다!

God loves everyone fairly.

그런데, 하나님의 사랑을 다른 사람들보다 더 많이 누리고 경험하는 사람들이 분명히 존재한다.

But there are people who experience God’s love more than others.

Honestly, I think I am one of them. 저는 제가 그런 사람이라고 믿어요.

I am proud of it. Because it doesn't prove I am better than others..

But it proves I love Jesus more than others.

저는 이것을 자랑하고 싶어요. 내가 다른 사람들 보다 더 잘나서 사랑 받는 것이 아니라, 내가 주님을 더 사랑한다는 것을 증명하기 때문입니다.

Would you want to be one of them?

여러분도 그런 사람이 되고 싶나요?

Then be thankful to God more often! And care what Jesus cares.

That’s how you love Jesus more.

그러면, 하나님께 더 자주 감사하세요! 그리고, 예수님이 사랑하는 것들을 여러분도 돌보세요. 그렇게 예수님을 더 사랑하면 되는 거예요.

[1 John 4:6, NLT] But we belong to God, and those who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen to us. That is how we know if someone has the Spirit of truth or the spirit of deception.

설교 | Message

우리가 유럽사람들을 부를 때, European 이라고 하는데, 그것은 유럽인이라는 European people 뜻과 함께 유럽의 것이라는 뜻이기도 합니다.

When we refer to Europeans, we say European, which means European along with European people.

보통은 얼굴이 창백한 사람들을 떠올리게 되지요.

Typically people with pale faces.

European 이라는 단어를 들으면 유럽이라는 지역 뿐 아니라 그들이 가지는 공통점들을 떠올리게 됩니다.

When you hear the word European, you think of not only the region of Europe, but also the commonalities they have.

African 도 마찬가지예요. 아프리카에서 온 사람들이라는 뜻으로 보통 피부색이 어두운 얼굴을 한 사람들을 떠올리죠.

The same goes for Africans. It means people from Africa and usually thinks of people with dark skin tones.

한국 사람들은 어떤가요?

How about Korean?

Korean 도 마찬가지에요. 한국 사람도, 한국의 것도 그렇게 부릅니다..

The same goes for Korea. Koreans means people of Korea and something belongs to Korea.

그러면 American 은 어떤 사람들인가요? 창백한 얼굴인가요? 어두운 색 얼굴인가요? 아니면 내 얼굴과 같은가?  그렇게 대답하기 어렵죠.

How about Americans? Is it a pale face? Is it a dark face? Or is it like my face? It's hard to answer that way.

나도 미국인이고, 여러분도 미국인이고, 다른 피부색을 가진 친구들도 미국인이예요.

이렇게 우리가 모두 American 이라는 것을 생각하면, 내 생각엔 모두가 섞여있는 American 이 최고인 것 같아요.

I am American, you are American, and all my friends of different skin colors are Americans.

Considering that we are all American like this, I think the American with all of us is the best.

어쨋든 American 도 결국은 Belong to America 라는 뜻이이에요.

우리가 속한 나라니까 조금은 자랑스럽게 생각해도 괜찮겠죠?

After all, American means Belong to America.

It's a country we belong to, so it's okay to be a little proud of it, right?

그러면, Christian 은 무슨의미인가? 그리스도인들이라는 뜻이며, 동시에 그리스도의 것이라는 뜻이에요.

Christian 은 어떻게 생긴 사람들일까요?

So, what does Christian mean? It means Christians, and at the same time it means that they belong to Christ.

What do Christians look like?

예수님에게 속해있는 사람들이기 때문에, 예수님을 닮아가는 사람들이죠.

예수님은 아주 작은 어린이부터, 힘이 센 사람들까지 사람들을 사랑하셨어요.

피부색이 다른 사람들도 사랑하셨고, 사람들에게 미움을 받는 사람들도 사랑하셨어요.Because they belong to Jesus, they are becoming more like Jesus.

Jesus loved people, from the smallest children to the powerful.

He loved people of different skin colors and loved those who were hated by people.

그래서 Christian 은 사랑하는 사람들이에요.

미운 사람들이 점점 없어지고, 사랑하는 사람들이 점점 많아지는 사람들!

Christ 인 예수님께 속한 사람들!

바로 Christian 입니다.

So Christian is the one who loves them.

The people we hate are disappearing, the people we love more and more!

지난 주에 우리는 예수님이 사탄에게 유혹을 어떻게 무찌르셨는지 보았어요.

예수님은 세가지 유혹을 받으셨는데, 결국 한가지 간단한 질문을 통해서 유혹에 넘어가지 않으셨죠.
그 질문이 뭐였는지 생각나죠?

맞아요. 

Last week we saw how Jesus overcame temptation by Satan.
Jesus was tempted by three temptations, but in the end he did not give in to temptation by asking one simple question. Do you remember what that question was?
that's right.

Does this honor God?

지난 주에 저도 여러가지 유혹을 받았었는데, 여러분은 어땠나요?
저도 이 질문을 해서 유혹을 물리친 적도 있고, 질문을 하지 않아서 실패한 적도 있었어요. 여러분은 어땠어요?
Last week, I was also tempted by various temptations, how about you?
There were times when I resisted temptation by asking this question,
and there were times when I failed because I didn't ask the question. How were you?

나쁜 생각과 행동들을 이기는 것은 쉽지 않아요.
그래도 우리가 이 질문을 하고, 예수님이 도와주시길 기도하면,
유혹을 물리칠 수 있어요.
Overcoming bad thoughts and actions is not easy.
Still, if we ask this question and pray to Jesus for help,
You can resist temptation with Jesus.

상상을 해보세요. 만약에,
수영을 정말 잘하는 선수의 마음이 우리 마음에 들어오면,
우리도 원래 내 실력보다는 수영을 훨씬 더 잘 할 수 있게 될거에요.
Just imagine. If the,
If the heart of an athlete who is really good at swimming comes into our hearts,
We will also be able to swim much better than our original skills.

최고의 피아니스트의 마음이 우리 마음에 들어오면,
피아노를 지금보다 더 잘 칠 수 있게 되겠죠.
When the heart of the best pianist enters our mind,
You will be able to play the piano better than you are now.

그러면 예수님의 마음이 우리에게 들어오면, 어떻게 될까요?
So, what happens when the heart of Jesus comes into us?

예수님은 사람들을 아주 많이 사랑하셨죠. 
그래서 우리도 더 사랑하는 사람이 될 수 있고,
또 나쁜 마음들, 유혹들을 더 잘 물리칠 수 있게 되겠지요!
Jesus loved people very much.
So we too can become more loving people,
You will be better able to resist bad minds and temptations!

우리 안에 계신 예수님의 마음이 바로 성령님이에요.
The heart of Jesus in us is the Holy Spirit.

그렇게 우리가 앞으로 우리 안에 함께 하시는 예수님을 생각하며,
예수님의 마음으로 사랑하고, 유혹들을 더 잘 물리칠 수 있게 되면 좋겠어요.
그러면, 우리 안에 평안한 마음과 기쁨이 더욱 자라날 거예요.
So we think of Jesus who is with us in the future,
I wish I could love with the heart of Jesus and be able to resist temptations better.
Then, peace of mind and joy will grow in us.

그렇지만, 우리는 실수할 수도 있고, 
유혹을 물리치는 것에 실패할 수도 있어요. 
However, we may make mistakes,
we may fail to resist temptation.

그럴땐 어떻게 해야 할까요?
What should I do in that case?

실패했을 때에도 너무 실망하지 않아도 되요.
주님께 솔직한 마음으로 기도하면,
다음에는 다시 잘 할 수 있는 믿음과 용기를 주실거예요.
You don't have to be too disappointed when you fail.
If you pray to the Lord with an honest heart,
He will give you the faith and courage to do well next time.

Dear Lord,
Every day we are tempted to do wrong thoughts and actions.
Help us to think of Jesus in that moment and do good thoughts and good deeds.
Then we believe that the heart of Jesus and the Holy Spirit within us will guard our hearts and minds. However, sometimes we fail and when we make mistakes, give us the courage to confess honestly to Jesus. Help me to overcome it with Jesus, who will give us faith and hope again.

여러분이 생각할 때에도 착한 행동과 나쁜 행동이 뭔지 알 거에요.

그런데, 나쁜 행동인줄 알면서도 하고 싶은 것들도 있지요?

그것을 성경은 ‘유혹’(Temptation) 이라고 해요.

The Bible calls it 'Temptation'.

성경에서 처음 이 말이 나온 것은 태초에 사람들을 창조하신 후에 얼마 안되어서

사탄이 뱀으로 나타나서 하나님이 금지한 선악과를 먹게 했던 바로 그 행동을 말하는 것이었어요. 아담과 하와는 유혹에 넘어가서 그 과일을 먹고 말았죠.

This word first appeared in the Bible not long after the creation of man in the beginning.
He was referring to the very act that Satan appeared as a serpent and made them eat the forbidden fruit of knowledge. Adam and Eve succumbed to temptation and ate the fruit.

그런데, 예수님도 사탄에게 ‘유혹’을 받으셨어요.

배고플 때에는 먹는 것이 하나님 보다 더 중요하지? 이렇게 유혹했고,

사람들이 다 보는 곳에서 천사들이 둘러싼 모습을 보여서 인기를 독차지 하라고 유혹했고, 또 온 세상의 돈과 군대들을 다 소유한 왕이 되게 해주겠다고 자신의 부하가 되라고 했어요. 예수님은 그 모든 유혹들을 다 이겨내셨어요.

However, Jesus was also “tempted” by Satan.
Isn't eating more important than God when you're hungry? so seduced,
He tempted him to monopolize his popularity by showing his angels around him in the public eye, and he told him to become his own subordinate to make him the king of all the world's money and armies. Jesus overcame all those temptations.

40일 동안이나 아무것도 드시지 않아서 정말 배도 고프고 힘드셨지만,

예수님은 사탄에게 “나는 하나님 말씀을 믿고 하나님을 가장 존귀히 여긴다” 

이렇게 말씀하셨어요.

아담과는 달리 이 모든 유혹을 물리치신 거에요.

He was really hungry and tired because he hadn't eaten for 40 days, but
Jesus said to Satan, “I believe in the word of God and I have the highest honor in God.”
You said this.
Unlike Adam, he resisted all these temptations.

만약에, 아담과 하와가 예수님처럼 뱀의 말이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 존귀히 여겼다면 얼마나 좋았을까요?

What if, like Jesus, Adam and Eve had believed and honored the word of God, not the word of the serpent?

우리도 나쁜 걸 알면서도 행동이나 말을 하려고 할 때, 한번 생각해 보는 거예요.

이 말이나 행동이 하나님을 존귀히 여기는 것인가? 아니면 반대인가?

Does this honor my God?

When we try to do something or say something even though we know it's bad, we think about it.
Are these words or actions honoring God? Or is it the other way around?

이 짧은 질문을 통해 우리가 올바른 행동을 하려고 한다면,

하나님이 도와주실까요? 안도와주실까요?

Prayer

하나님 아버지,

예수님이 우리를 위해 모든 유혹을 이기셔서, 우리 모두가 하나님의 자녀가 될 수 있었습니다. 그렇게 은혜로 하나님의 자녀가 된 우리가, 이제 하나님을 존귀히 여기는 생각과 말과 행동을 하며 살 수 있도록 도와주세요. 그래서 예수님처럼 나쁜 생각과 마음들을 물리치고 하나님이 주시는 평안과 기쁨 누리며, 또 나누길 원합니다.

사랑하는 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다.

Heavenly Father,
Jesus overcame all temptations for us so that we could all become children of God. Please help us who have become children of God by grace so that we can now live our lives with thoughts, words, and actions that honor God. So, like Jesus, we want to get rid of bad thoughts and hearts, enjoy the peace and joy that God gives us, and share it with our neighbors.

I pray in the name of my beloved Jesus.
